I also own a copy of Evolution Worlds on gamecube, a combination/reworking of both Evolution games from the Dreamcast. I'm pretty sure this is also obscure because I've only ever known of about 5 people who've ever played it.

Yeah, it's not a very pretty game and the battles are just generic turn based. If there's one thing to praise it for is the fact you basically have a v-pet following you around, with it growing stronger the more you feed it and care for it. I guess another unique thing about it is you don't have tradition special attacks but rather can summon living toys to do them for you, some will even act as bonus party members in battle.

Upon further review, it's not actually obscure. It is curiously enough one of the highest selling games for the PS1, and has multiple Greatest Hits reprints. Yet I seem to be the only one who owns a copy. Also, the sequel Frogger 2, which significantly toned down the bullshit difficulty that plagued the first game.

A lot of 3D arcade reboots from that era were pretty good. There was Centipede, Pong, Gauntlet Legends, The Next Tetris, Robotron... all solid games, if you're really that into repetitive arcade-style gameplay.
>>
This probably isn't obscure but I don't know anyone else who has played it. Clunky as heck controls but was still fun.

So many hours on this game as a kid. Literally the most terrifying thing was walking around and hearing loud footsteps get closer and closer until the camera snapped out and your hunter yelling in pain as a fucking raptor ate your shit.

The cheat codes were the best though. Super fast running and jumping made killing everything that much more enjoyable.

Guys can you help me out?

I played this japanese PS1 game years ago and I remember how it looks but I never knew the name, it had this horror game vibe and an anime artstyle.

>it starts with a cutscene, you are some japanese guy in the street at night
>you later appear in a mansion
>some spider-like giant thing starts chasing you through the rooms and in the end you have to run away from it in a hall

Never passed that part and I put it away somewhere so I can't play it and I have never seen it posted here or on /vr/.

Faselei for the Neo Geo Pocket Color

I got my copy from someone who worked on a video game magazine & had it mailed to him for a review by SNK. Supposedly only 5000 english copies of the game exist. SNK went bankrupt a week later.

I can't tell you much because I only tried to emulate it on PCSX 2 on my pc. I played it for a bit but since the graphics were fucked up and it doesn't emulate well, I can't give you a good verdict on that since I couldn't progress.

however, from what little I've seen it looked pretty cool behind all the glitching. it starts off in space and with everybody being dead in a space shuttle. sounds like a great narrative to be unfolding.

EN 1 and 2 emulate a lot better because it's PS1. so try these as well if you find time.

Back in the late 80s - early 90s there was this neat program for Macs called HyperCard. It allowed users to make presentations, and also early hypermedia before the Internet/Web. It was pretty flexible, so users also made adventure games. Myst is the most well-known example of this type of game. Most of these games have long since been completely lost to the ages, which is a shame, because they have this weird surreal quality to them, and there were many original ideas that never got tried again.

I'm pretty sure this game is obscure but I also need help remembering what it was.
-Sega Saturn game
-Side scroller, you had 3-4 playable characters that you can switch out of
-Said characters had sports based movesets, one had a baseball bat, another had a bowling ball
-I think you fought orcs? The first level took place in a city and I just remember it was very blue in color.

>>
>>378833670
it's less fun than most people were cool with at the time. it's more of a dark, gritty survival game that took a lot of risks that ended up offputting fans of the earlier games, which were more generic JRPG fare. this one's got a really high stakes approach to survival, and it's something that really hasn't been replicated. plus the SOL system is cool and helps offput the initial shock of a semi-permadeath RPG.

>>
>>378833754
i recently picked up a copy off ebay (it's actually really cheap for an RPG) after hearing good things about it and i was really surprised to see that it's not well regarded by most people and actually killed the series. considering how highly praised yoko taro's games are around here, i'm a little amazed that people are so quick to talk shit about dragon quarter.

>>378833896
in dragon quarter the permadeath basically serves to drive home the fact that you're extremely vulnerable at all times. it's not a roguelike at all. in fact on replays (after clears and retries) the game opens up additional routes and expands on certain cutscenes, but you also get to keep your equipment and whatever's in the shared pool of experience you can allocate between your party members. it makes it necessary to choose whether to distribute your spare experience to your players on your current playthrough or play more riskily in hopes of keeping it when you die. it's very interesting mechanically in that way.
>>
>>378833896

To be fair, DQ did it way before all the indie games started. The game gives you the means to bounce back pretty easily though as you only lose xp and money, and you keep all equipment. But you can one shot the playthrough if you're careful and thoughtful, use bait and traps on the map, and pick your battles.

I just mean the game gets a little meta with its mechanics. The dragon power is meant to be OP as shit, nod addictive, but over indulge, and you die. The game deliberately baits you with hard boss battles and has enemy NPCs goading you into using your dragon power. There is no way to lower it though, and it slowly, slowly ticks forward as you play, even if you abstain from using your powers- your humanity slowly draining away from you, down in the darkness under the ruins of the world..
