It was the game I picked when I was 17 because I had a 14 hour trip with my parents and I needed something to play. I genuinely hated it at first, the combat was overly complex, there was so much goddamn dialogue, Neku is the worst fucking character ever, and the music was jpop shit.

As I was forced to give the game its due over the long car ride, I started to realize that the game was fucking brilliant and the music complimented the rhythm of the gameplay itself. Wonderful game.

Everyone talks about Yakuza and it has like 8 sequels so I had to play it for myself. Yakuza's gameplay is absolute garbage. You run back and forth all the way across town while getting into random encounters and the camera angle is constantly changing so you have to keep reorienting yourself constantly. There's a taxi system but it's rarely convenient because they don't have one near Starlight, one of the most commonly visited areas.
Combat is super simple until you get to bosses where you're lucky to get a single hit or two against before they start spamming their dodge move or their super. It takes a really long time before you can learn moves like the counter attack or parry to deal with them. And enemies with stun guns are just the most frustrating thing.

The side stories can be funny and the story is interesting. And there are a whole ton of full game minigames to play. It's just, it probably should've been a movie with a DvD menu so you can choose to watch the side quests or not.

Honestly the beat-em-up sections in Yakuza were the best moments of the game by far. But they're few and far between and the millennium tower one is a pain because of all the escalators.

2 fixes a lot of the combat quirks. Lock on for instance gets fixed, which basically turns 1v1 into a dumbed-down virtua fighter match.
So maybe give 2 a try before you write off the whole thing.
