It's pretty good. The main character herself and even her friends aren't that SJW outside of bear and dog man being a gay couple, which is never really emphasized by the story so much as just a thing. Most everything that people use from this game as an excuse to turn /v/ into /pol/ is from 2 side characters with very small roles, 1 of which is a character you kinda hate anyways.

Only 3 of the group are either gay or bisexual. Mae is desperate, Gregg is queer, Angus is assumed to be gay, Bea shows no indication she's anything but straight. Nobody else's sexuality comes up.

There's absolutely no discussion about masculinity, and the only references to nationality and of course race would be Selma and the old guy complaining about Mexicans taking jobs. Which, however you feel about that, it's a small town complaint that happens. It's realistically included and in the case of Selma, even painted in a positive light.
Mae is a Caulfield archetype as well, she's supposed to be unlikeable, the game goes out of its way to show you how shitty she can be. The development of her comes in much the same vein as Caulfield's does.

Gregg outright says he's queer, which means he's still questioning his sexuality and in 5 years he might be full homo, straight, or bi. Their relationship takes a back seat to everything else so we really don't know much about them beyond the fact they're at least gay for each other.

Well the theme of the game is everyone is broken.

Bea is severely depressed
Mae has a diagnosable mental illness
Angus was locked in a closet as a child and probably beaten
Gregg has BPD and probably some kind of family issues given he's such a delinquent, probably father issues given he's fairly effiminate and kind, so he probably had a "friend mom" so he turned out to be an irresponsible little shit.
Mae's dad was an alcoholic and her mom has mood swings and a poison womb which resulted in several miscarriages.

In quite a few ways yeah, although I'm pretty certain Benson wanted her to be the "pity pot nobody understands" valedictorian for people to find truth and reliability in.

Holowka's interpretations might be different though, since he is the main writer. Probably wanted her socialist/Jackie-beliefs to be within the same "lost" search for hope as her secret Christian faith.

You get to decide which friend to hang out with, and there are minigames associated with that, but most of what you're doing is wandering around a slightly-changing town each day talking to every Tom Dick and Harry who have a speech bubble over their heads.

This "Game" (VN) is pretty good. I like it a lot.

Don't take the characters as being smart individuals, that's not the point. They're a bunch of angsty young adults with (Mostly) self inflicted problems.

If you're into that sort of thing it's great.

"Increasingly" is an important word there. As I said above, if that's what it's starting to mean to people, k, but recognize that is a modern usage. Ten years ago you'd have groups like the "Gay Straight Alliance" or people advocating for "LGBT" teens, but now they have splintered into so many terms/groups as they are becoming more socially accepted that the language is morphing over time.

Just the fact that the characters' sexuality is apparently so super important is a huge red flag.

I think the game is pretty great as long as some of the characters resonate with you. If you just can't relate to any of the characters it probably won't pull you in. Still, it's a pretty neat little slice of life VN. Also Cthulhu.
