The great debate.
>>
the fat one because it reminds me of ur mom
>>
>>378780687
fat looked cooler, but I don't think it had anything else going for it, really. did they remove backwards compatibility from slim? I swear I remember playing PS1 games on the slim too.
>>
>>378780687
Fat can use hdd for games, so fat
>>
>>378780967
This.
>>
>>378780687
why do sony consoles have such terrible designs? the only one that looks halfway decent and looks like a gaming console is original playstation
>>
>>378780857
The slim does have backwards compatibility but from what I remember playing PS1 games on it fucks up the drive so most people never did.
>>
>>378780687
My fat one broke after half a year for no real reason. My slim one is still working

>Slim modded: USB or network for games, must use FMCB or soldering
>Fat modded: Slim stuff plus HDD use
There's nothing to debate.
>>
>>378781516
For me it was the opposite, I bought a PS2 fat in 2003, in 2005 I decided to get a slim, the slim simply stopped reading anything after a year and I couldn't be bothered to change the drive so I sold it but I still have my PS2 fat and it still works fine after 14 years.
>>
>>378780687
Slim for aesthetics, fat for fuctionality
>>
>>378780687
slim is a top loader and can play gold discs. fat has a more comfy feel.
>>
>>378780687
my ps2 slim still works, sometimes it just has trouble reading the discs but it happens pretty rarely and when it does all I have to do is very lightly tap the lid with my finger
>>
they're both sexy

I vote for the Slim v2
>>
>>378781801
Why would I want to use the hard drive if it uses ancient IDE connectors and it doesn't even have amazing compatibility with games? The hard drive is a shitty meme. With SMB all I have to do is hook up a ethernet cable and plug that into a USB adapter if you don't have two ethernet ports on your computer. You don't even need to waste time transferring isos.
>>
>>378782910
Some games don't work using the network method, Mainly FMV ones.
>>
>>378782910
>>378783185
>Not using a modchip + burned DVD's

come on anons get with the times
>>
>>378783446
>burned DVD's
Those are outdated, grandpa.
>>
>>378783185
OPL 0.9.2 with full duplex supposedly fixes that for general cases, or disable mode 6 which is the in-game reset module which uses resources and crashes some games.

>>378783446
The whole point of why any of this exist is to not use the laser. The only time you should be using the PS2 laser is to put the console into genuine PS1 mode.
>>
>>378783562
I still use the modchip method cause it works 100% of the time. I did the usb trick with free mcboot but the videos would always stutter. I modded my PS2 back in like 04 to play the naruto games that never came out here till later lol
>>
>>378780687
i have the fat one but still idgaf about others PS2
>>
>>378783446
why use a modchip when you can just use freemcboot. that's just spending money for no reason
>>
>>378784554
This >>378784329
>>
>>378783185
>Some games don't work using the network method, Mainly FMV ones.
So nothing of value lost.
>>
early slim models were badly designed, with power cables that frequently fell out and disc drives that scratched your discs.
Later models were pretty decent but other than that there isn't a significant difference.
Slim is cuter.
>>
>>378781228
This is literally the most backwards opinion I've seen on /v/. Sony has the absolute best design, comparing the Ps4 to any other console, is like comparing Mozart to Lil Wayne.
>>
>>378780687
Slim
>>
>>378784939
I have the last Slim model.
Am i safe from disc scratching?

My laser is still clean and well, if i run the PS2 for more than 1 hour, makes a fuck ton of noise with the fans though.
>>
>>378780687
fat
>>
>>378784660
wat? original ps2 uses freemcboot just fine.
>>
>>378780967
This. Any other opinion is retarded.
>>
>>378786169
Agreed. The really only question is which is the best original ps2 version.
>>
>>378783609
>The whole point of why any of this exist is to not use the laser. The only time you should be using the PS2 laser is to put the console into genuine PS1 mode.
You can run PS1 games from HDD now.
>>
>>378780687
Slim with freemcboot probably. I have the fat though.
>>
>>378786532
So throw in Free HDBoot into the fatty.
>>
>>378781817
I had a fat one since it came out, a few of my friends went through 2 or even 3 slims in that time, but I guess that probably amounts to me not using mine nearly as much as they used theirs
>>
>>378786647
Yeah, but buying an HDD vs just using inbuilt LAN, it's a no brainer really. I'm gonna stick with my fat because there's no point changing what works, but slim is objectively superior if LAN works fine now.
>>
PS2 FAT
+can use any multitap adapter
+an use internal hard drive (ALL games free bby draggindrop!)
+urable
-its big
-costs more in the current market

PS2 Slim
-can only use certain multitap adapters
-can't use internal hard drive (buy your games or use burned discs like some fucking grandpa)
-its fragile
+its small
+costs less in the current market
>>
>>378786345
Only a few ones, the majority has software glitches or flat out doesn't boot (crash bash, crash team racing, disc 2 of FFVIII, parasite eve 2, ace combat 3 jp version), you also need to fuck around with ulaunch elf and make a separate launcher for every single game you want, i'd rather hunt for those games on old/less known vidya stores and amazon, even if they were overpriced.
>>
>>378780825
OP BTFO
>>
>>378787330
>multitap
who the fuck uses this? Tell people that wanna play ps2 games to fuck off and buy a slim online for dirt cheap
>internal HDD
Cause lets use oldass HDDs to run games and destroy the drives
>durable
if your not autistic and slamming your consoles around why does this matter? Slim is more compact anyways

Newest slim+network load isos is best method, fuck the rest
>>
>>378780687
Fat because it can play my PS1 copy of Puzzle Fighter
>>
>>378780857
The slim is backwards compatible, but some games don't work on it and a few specific others have slowdown or other issues
>>
>>378786345
You're missing the point that running from PS1 or HDD or SMB is emulation. The only way to play PS1 games natively is to put the console into PS1 mode which is done through the laser. The PS1 mode doesn't recognize things like USB ports or anything the PS1 machine never had. Everything that you've been playing through FMCB is emulated with less than 100% compatibility and less than 100% accuracy.
>>
>>378789654
>Cause lets use oldass HDDs to run games and destroy the drives
There are sata to IDE adapters that work. I don't remember brands though. Buy a laptop sata drive and an adapter and your good.

I've personally always wanted to use a usb3 thumb drive, like those Samsung 128GB ones, but there's no USB3 to IDE adapter sadly.

fat, because FMCB modding a slim is a bitch and a half, have to get little fucking cardstock cards or something else thick enough to block the lens without ruining it forever and making the system unable to read any discs at all. fat you just pop the cover off and yank out the disc.
>>
>>378780825
Op, time to commit sepuku, your honor has been destroyed
