Some people will hate them just because they are elves. At the same times they never did anything remarkable or had their own game where you could explore their culture, which for instance made a lot of people like Dunmer so much. I also can't think of a sympathic bosmer npc.

If you want to hit stuff, you need some good AGI, full stamina and should be proficient with that weapon. Mana does not regenerate unless you use mods, but the game is build around this. Do look around and do quests in the starting area. Alchemie is utterly broken. You can steal an alchemie set in the mage guild in Caldera

Then the most important thing is to get access to a spell maker right away, as you can make your own custom spells that are more efficient than the ones you start with. The Mages Guild is the easiest place to find them, and you don't even need to be a member to use the services of some of them, including the one in Balmora. When you're making a custom spell, play around with the magnitude and duration and pay attention to the cost/chance as you move the sliders. To get the best value out of your custom spell, keep inching the magnitude up by one until the cost finally changes, then go back one so you have the most powerful spell you can make of that specific cost bracket.

When creating your character, pay attention to the magicka multipliers: the effects that say "Fortify Maximum Magicka". These come from the Altmer and Breton races and the Apprentice, Atronach, and Mage birthsigns. You want at least one source of Fortify Maximum Magicka so you can be sure you'll have enough to cast all the spells you want. There are other ways to fortify your magicka with enchantments later on, but picking one of these to help you out early goes a long way.

Keep in mind that in most cases a single spell does not stack with itself, but multiple spells with the same effect do. So if you want to summon a skeleton army for example, create lots of identical "summon skeleton" spells and cast them in sequence.

Finally, magic is so fun in Morrowind because of all the effects available in the game. It has the widest variety of magic and things you can do with magic in the series, and that even includes Daggerfall. However, you need to actually find each effect in the game somehow, mostly from spell merchants. Because of this, your options are limited early on but grow massively once you learn the most interesting effects, like Levitation, Jump, Fortify Attribute, Fortify Skill, etc.
