20-30 hour game (depending on difficulty) with a ton of replayability (if you want to collect all the weapons).

Story is fanservice shitfest the kind that only a decade or older japenese anime tier franchise can deliver.

Gameplay, music, graphics(for the most part) are all excellent. Definetly one of the best games on the PS3.

Better gameplay than msg3, worst sneaking than msgv. You can use metal gear and that makes it the best in the series imo

It's very underappreciated but simultaneously very disappointing. It doesn't feel quite like the send-off the series and Snake deserved and the narrative seems to progress regardless of catalyst or impetus. Things just seem to happen with little rhyme or reason, and it's not very cohesive. The gameplay is smooth and fluid, but the level design is all point A to point B, eschewing the nonlinear, exploration focused design the series was known for. Boss fights are good, but the bosses themselves are incredibly forgettable (there are some very obvious exceptions).

It still manages to have some of the best moments in the entire series.

So you're played every other title except 4?
Why are you playing 4 last? Have you been playing chronologically?

I believe it was the MGS that introduced fast crouch movement, which was then carried over to peace walker and the following titles. Playing in release order, MGS4 really curates the controls and makes the experience refreshing and more fluid.

Have fun, its a good one.

A ton of fanservice. Understandably terrible answers to questions people asked about MGS2 that were never meant to be answered. A perfect wrap-up to the series despite the overall stor being "meh". The best gameplay in the series.

The gameplay is considered to be the best in the series, even though I preferred MGS3's gameplay, it felt less sluggish but that's probably because MGS4 plays at 30fps.

The catch is the gameplay is enjoyable when you're allowed to play. There's a shitload of cutscenes this time compared to the earlier entries to the point where they can be considered interrupting. This is even worse because the story itself isn't nearly as good as the previous three games, so having to sit through the cutscenes isn't worth it this time imo.

You'll likely play through it once and maybe enjoy the story the first time, but on the subsequent playthroughs the mediocrity becomes more apparent and you won't even wanna sit through the cutscenes. Also the ending was really dumb and pointless.

Acts 1 and 2 are good but after that the game falls off a cliff. I'd put MGSV higher than MGS4 just for the fact that I was allowed to play, and the story (while still mediocre and unfinished) wasn't imposing.
>>
>>378771092
10 hours of cutscenes is not an exaggeration, but there's at least 1 hour of gameplay there.
>>
Best classic MGS gameplay (and best in the series) and the best boss fights in the series. Lots of feels if you grew up with MGS1.
>>
>>378771876
>>378772025
Going undetected in MGS4 boss extreme is way harder than anything in GZ or TPP as far as stealth goes.

hours of fan service and a story that shits on everything the prequels established

best gameplay of the series before MGSV tho
>>

Too much of the gameplay is just a setpiece or a third rate shooter. The only time sneaking is fun is in the first two acts.

I loved this game. I guess you could say it didn't properly follow up on the insanity of MGS2, but it was good enough for me, loved all the fanservice shit.

Kinda torn on some things though. The game feels very short with only the first two acts having normal gameplay, after that you have act 3 which is 100% sneaking in plainclothes and then a boss fight, act 4 which barely has any people in it as you sneak through Shadow Moses, and act 5 which is just a quick assault before the game basically ends.

Still love it though. David Hayter's performance is sublime, he came a long way from the hokey shit in the previous 3 games.

Only wish we could get it on PC so it could be played with a framerate that isn't like, 10fps. I know they have to take out some dialogue that mentions PS3 features but whatever, this game is too good to be stuck on the PS3.

Need more games with cool old people. MGS4 and The Witcher 3 are among the few.
>>
>>378770881
Lucky you, I wish i could experience it for the first time again. It's single handedly the best metal gear experience. The memes of it being to cinematic are true, but there's a good chunk of gameplay that's god tier.
>>
I fucking love MGS4. The bad thing is after act 2 it's painfully bare. If all five acts had been as long as 1/2, of course people would still bitch, but it would have been an even better game. Best fucking cqc in the series. When it came out, I was blown away by the visuals. It still stands out as a great looking game.

I say all this as a faggot who is undecided between 1/3 as his favorite. Mgs4 is over the top, storywise, but it's still fantastic.

I hope MGO2 comes back.
>>
A shitty flick that completely ruins MGS 2, the greatest game ever made

I'm in the same boat as you OP, I bought a PS3 for MGS4 and ended up falling in love with Yakuza 4/5 but in any case:

-Presentation: 10/10 amazing
-Gameplay: 7/10 it works but the bosses kind of suck and it just serves as a vessel for presentation

I'm at the last part and I suck ass so I can't beat it - good luck tho

>w/e, kid.

That still doesn't change the fact that as a Metal Gear game, it's a noticeable step down from its predecessors mainly because the gameplay to cutscene ratio is awful combined with the story and writing being bad.

The fact that Kojima didn't even want to do MGS4 and that he was depressed during development says a lot and it shows.

I already posted my thoughts here>>378773847, read it if you want or don't.

It's a very depressing game to play. The framerate is shit, the playable levels are short, the bosses are shit, nothing stops you from loading up your perma silenced tranq gun with a billion rounds, the story is an aggressive waste of time and kojima would rather use the cutscenes to cover as many series plotholes as possible instead of trying to tell a story that can stand on its own feet.

Plus the shit about Zero in 4 feels like it came out of a really bad fever dream.

>You can have your opinion

And you can have yours. I'm not even mindlessly shitting on the game, all I'm saying is it's a weak entry and Kojima's done better work than this.

MGO2 was the best in its series though and innovative compared to a lot of multiplayer games nowadays.
>>
>>378770881
Only the first two chapters really part as part of the game. The rest of it is just a sometimes interactable cutscene that wraps up the MG saga.

The lack of actual gameplay was the most glaring flaw but I do think it wrapped up the MG story nicely. I still think Rising isn't canon.
>>
>>378775262
>posting on /v/ instead of paying attention to the game

Are you the average /tv/ poster? Stop this shit, just go play the game.
>>
1, 2 and 4 remain my favorite of this series. Some people seem to think that 3 is the best one but while it was alright I really prefer the future tech warfare over running around in a bad PS2 jungle.

Peace Walker is a good story in a trash game, completely kneecapped by being on the PSP and thus every single zone is about the size of a convenience store.

MGSV I thought was a great game but the minimalist story is a jarring shift and the fact that the game doesn't have an ending speaks to how fucked over by Konami it was.
>>
>>378776502
If he posted that right after taking it he'd still just be listening to Snake monologuing about modern warfare.
>>
>>378776370
Rising tells a better story about the war economy and VR than mgs4 did. Without the absolute terrible pacing.
>>
>>378776154
You could also argue that that's why the game wasn't as good as it could have been, because Kojima was tired.

It's also why Solid was just hastily killed off. Kojima was tired of Metal Gear, and so he gave Solid the axe.
>>
>>378770881
MGS4 is pretty weird. While MGS1, 2, and 3 were all different from each other in their own right, MGS4 goes way the fuck out there. The first two chapters are extremely well done but the gameplay nosedives after that.

The gameplay of Chapter 3 and 4 could have stayed but they should've been much, much shorter. Chapter 3 should have been shortened by half and include a battle in the city, similar to the first two chapters. There should have been another battlefield sneaking mission in a new area inbetween Ch. 3 and 4.
Ch. 4 should've been half of its length, period.
The battlefield sneaking idea was brilliant but they didn't utilize it enough and the majority of the game is bullshit levels.
>>
>>378770881
You have poor grammar. Game is good though, don't let others tell you different. Why play the rest first before 4? That doesn't really make sense.

I agree for the most part but that absurd lag made the game worthless to me. Even trying to work with it by assuming you got a headshot and then moving on could fuck you over sometimes.

MGO3 isn't perfect by any means but I think it's pretty damn good and the lag is actually playable, but again not perfect. I also feel like the Buddy System and Fulton Balloons add a lot to the game without being broken. Can't say I'm a fan of the Walker Gears though.

>>
>>378777276
I wish we had more stealth based multiplayer that plays like MGO in general, seeing how things ended between Kojima and Konami and MGS looking to be dead in general I don't think we'll ever see a refined version of MGO.

I would've played MGO3 if they handled it properly on PC. I ignored it not just because of the gameplay changes but mainly because of the lazy P2P multiplayer implementation that just permits hacking.
>>
>>378771092

7 hours of cutscenes, up to 20 hours of gameplay if you take your time.
>>
>>378771170
This is true. I didn't have a PS3 when MGS4 came out so I watched all the cutscenes on youtube to tide me over (something I had never done before or since). I thought it would be a shitty experience compared to the actual game because of all the cool TECHNOLOGY and easter eggs you expect in a MGS game, and I'd heard the gameplay was the best of the series. When I actually played it I honestly didn't feel like I got anything more out of it than I did from watching the cutscenes. It really is just a long, shitty movie with some playable interludes.
>>

MGS4 seemed amazing when I was playing it for the first time as an impressionable teenager who took everything at face value and just enjoyed the ride, it's easily my least favourite out of the series after taking a more critical viewpoint but it's still a fun conclusion to the saga, especially considering it was never supposed to have one in the first place. They did a surprisingly decent job of tying up all the loose ends.

It has the worst concentration of Kojima bullshit in the series, just thinking about any scene involving Naomi, Vamp, Drebin, Johnny and Meryl makes me want to throw up. Liquid Ocelot just about makes it worth it, though. Do it for him.

Snakes fate is quite ambiguous at the end of 4. He's not dead at the end and the supposed deadline for his life was bullshit anyway.

>be straight with me Naomi, how long do I have left?

>I dunno lol could be weeks months or years who cares just live life

Not all that different than his fate after MGS2.

>whether it all happened or not

Plenty of things were open for debate/interpretation at the end of MGS2 but this is not one of them.
>>
>>378781624
I don't see how it's ambiguous. Otacon wasn't just dreaming about losing his sister and Olga wasn't imaginary. It was an elaborate recreation of shadow moses but the actors themselves were real.

His grammar is above average for someone who is obviously ESL. Certainly not fobbish enough to bring it up like you did. I wonder how well you can type and speak in foreign languages?

>Why play the rest first before 4? That doesn't really make sense

Are you retarded or something?

>I would've played MGO3 if they handled it properly on PC
Playing Jap games on PC is suffering. Never do it. It runs well enough on consoles, if that's any consolation.

It's pretty crazy how the mid-2000's had great stealth multiplayer games between Splinter Cell and MGO2, and then they just kind of disappeared. MGO3 is nice but where's the Red vs Blue vs Snake game mode that made MGO2 so unique? Is there any other modern stealth multiplayer game out there?

>TECHNOLOGY and easter eggs you expect in a MGS game

It was full of it though. If you played the game thoroughly, you'd know this. It didn't have as much codec dialog as 2/3 but there was still plenty of easter eggs and shit.

What was up with the ending sequence then? The scene where Snake and Raiden are standing in the streets of NYC looked like a dream sequence, and the pedestrians were just walking past and through Raiden and Snake as if nothing happened at all. Seemed like Raiden/the player was experiencing a VR simulation.

>Snakes fate is quite ambiguous at the end of 4.

There was a novel version of MGS4 that supposedly said that Solid lived long enough to see Sunny get married I think. I might be wrong but I saw somewhere that the book was considered official.

The tracking part of Ch2 was pretty great for this. Grabbing a Frog's crotch and the UFO site were pretty ridiculous. It's nothing you would ever find or expect to encounter on a normal playthrough though.

It goes really retarded towards the end but it's a legit fun experience and a much better game than Peace Walker and V
>>
>>378770881
Long cutscenes with really good gameplay that's not utilized as much as it should have been.

Some of the best sequences in the series, but one of the most retarded plots imaginable. Trying to patch up the plot-holes left behind made this a clusterfuck.

And Akiba... hate hate Akiba.

>Playing Jap games on PC is suffering. Never do it.

I mean, I played Dark Souls 1 online and I only encountered a hacker once. There's exceptions.

>Is there any other modern stealth multiplayer game out there?

Not that I know of. As far as I know they're all dead. All the multiplayer games out now are either class based/MOBA shit, battle royale garbage or the same FPS shit everybody's been playing since Gen 7.

I'd say Dark Souls not even memeing and Rocket League are among the few innovative multiplayer success stories in the past decade.

It has alot of cutscenes, but the gameplay you get is alot of fun. Story is pretty depressing especially at the end so get ready for them feels.

MGS 6: Foxalive restores Solid Snake's HP to full, and reverses his age, he goes and retires in Alaska, racing huskies.

4 is the complete opposite of V
All plot and no gameplay and fanservice, while V is all gameplay and no plot while shitting on fans
>>
The gameplay alone without the cutscenes is longer than the entire COD4 game, for example. But cool guys on /v/ say it's A LE MOVIE LE LE FUNNY LE MOVIE LE LE so LE RETARD U LE RETARD)))

Why would you even ask dude seriously. People 90 % of people here don't even know what a good game is.
>>
Have to be honest, back in the day the graphics were really fucking good for a 2008 "POWER OF THE CELL" game
>>
>>378785857
To be honest my only desire of V was to hear Zero's side of the story, and was not disappointed. The rest of the game however was rather disappointing, but at least I got what I wanted
>>
>>378770881
I unironically enjoyed this game. It's the only MGS game I could get into enough to see it all the way through. I played it when it was new and at the time was pretty blown away by the visuals even though I know it was still being held back by console hardware limitations.
