I still occasionally use Gaston in random encounters simply because i think the mental image of him rushing in before Nanashi can move is funny though.

The other characters always try to make fun of him in the game or says that he's useless. But gameplay-wise he's better than all of them combined together.

I wonder if that was on purpose. Every SMT vet knows how good stat buffs are, even if they are somewhat random with Navarre.
