I played this game for the first time about four years ago when I was 20 (so no nostalgia) on my friend's psp. I got maybe half way through and had a lot of fun with it.
I played through the whole thing a few months ago on emulator and it was real good.
The end game was awful though, even with speedups I couldn't make it through the endgame bosses. Real letdown.

They really aren't done any better or worse than any other FF. The only difference is that you constantly hear them talk and joke around during set pieces or after a fight, giving them a stronger connection to the player. FF6 did that by having set pieces where characters broke off and helped each other. If you put the game on mute with no subtitles and skipped the on tour missions would prompto or gladiolus still be well developed? You return to the beach resort from the beginning to find it overrun with daemons and you head to Insomnia for the battle against the final god and Ardyn who's been waiting, it all culminates there.

There is a very clear buildup and trajectory from carefree to serious that the story takes, it's not a sudden shift midway of tone, things are getting serious even before they go to Altissia.
