I'm about to start her part of the game which is supposedly the actual good part of the game. I kind of hope the narrative actually does pick up and manages to surprise me and it's not just another case of weebs being weebs and praising les wacky depressing Japanese otaku writer guy again because so far it's basically felt like I've been able to predict every single plot point and attempted twist or subversion just out of sheer familiarity with the type of writer Taro Yoko appears to be, aka not a particularly good one at anything besides lore type material.

The guys sense of dialogue writing is frankly shit at worst, seemingly unintentionally comical at best particularly with the side quests. It's like oh here comes the part where we basically find out again the whole side quest was basically for nothing and just displaying some form of nihilistic philosophy and the player characters lamp shading how weird it is or that NPC was. The main story has been better, but frankly not that great for the amount of praise it's received up to and through the ending of Route B. IMO the most exciting stretch of the first couple routes was where you fought that huge robot over the ocean in the multi stage boss fight. It felt like it was written by an entirely different person it just stayed focused on the specifics of the engagement and lore. To be honest I almost kind of regret playing through most of the sidequest stuff. It was good for leveling and getting chips and shit but the writing for 50% of them is just predictable nihilistic nonsense quest after quest.

Also my god Adam and Eve are such retarded fucking caricature antagonists. I really hope I wasn't actually supposed to feel bad for Eve or something that 2B killed his ridiculously fujobait caricature of a brother or there's some sort of twist in the final routes that paint them in a new light because my goodness.

Man sorry but most of the writing in this game is just really fucking bad to me or comes across as too comical to really take as part of some grander narrative. It's always possible things change in the final route but even the decent parts of the main story have just been nothing special so far and kind of a retread of popular genre tropes albeit with a perpetual doom and gloom tone to them. I find it funny that the game gets the Story Rich tag on Steam for example as I've just found the narrative pretty repetitive and short through the first couple routes just kind of retreading the same ground really. It feels really padded out and anything but story rich and that's before I get to the part about how Route B is basically just Route A from 9S perspective. It has it's moments and occasionally makes me chuckle but they're very few and far between and I feel like I'm doing side quests for completionists sake at this point. Maybe I just have higher standards than most for sci-fi writing that's supposed to be masterfully done. I don't even find it particularly complex either, like I said I've been able to predict essentially every single plot thread or twist up to this point by now just from having spent a good 15 years watching anime and J-Drama and knowing a lot of the writing tropes. I'm going through the list of side quests and main story events right now trying to recall one that surprised me or stood out and I'm thinking maybe the one with Engels or the Game Development one.

I mean people aren't exactly coming out with great defenses of why it's supposed to be the greatest thing ever written. It's like it's just presumed that everybody is supposed to think that way. It's not like I haven't been having fun with it, just it's hard not to notice that hardly anybody aside from hardcore weebs really have anything positive to say about the writing in it and even then it's non-specific. Just Taro Yoko is a genius, what a guy etc. Like.....

It's entire fanbase kind of feels that way. I just assumed it was standard invasion shit. I mean I doubt there's really a reason other than that. Aliens show up, invade Earth, there's supposedly some sort of resistance but it doesn't quite work out and cue the millennia long stalemated war in a sci-fi narrative. Most of the cast in this game feels like it just does shit just because and it always needs to be the most depraved and on the face of it fucked up shit because that's just how this Taro Yoko guy writes everything. It's essentially the only tone or method of storytelling thing he seems to understand. Faction A does bad shit to Faction B and Faction B does bad shit to Faction A because that's just kind of the way he sees the world. Just because a game touches those themes doesn't automatically make them genius thoughtful narrative writing decisions worth considering at length though is my point. Shocking and stand out yes, but even Taro Yoko admits that's basically the reason he writes the way he does about the things he does, not because he specifically wants to but because he feels it's the only way for him to stand out as a director in amidst the vast multi-billion dollar video game industry.

This game got the Nier franchise a bunch of new fans, but if he just rehashes these tropes and narratives and shock value tendencies with any upcoming entries in it I doubt he's going to hold onto many of them and it'll get old really fast (it even started to get old in this game alone where it just piles tragedy porn upon tragedy porn at times IMO simply for the sake of depicting it) so sooner or later if he wants to hold on to his newer international fans he's going to want to come up with some new angle or gimmick and find other tones and ideas to write about besides the whole trying to get players to think of the PC's and themselves as equivalent to mass murderers otherwise he'll just kind of stagnate as much as anything and fail to stand out in the future now that he actually has a few more people's ears globally.

I mean he's already sort of done this style of narrative several times now dating back to Drakengard albeit significantly toned down for this game, it's just for the first time people that have never played any of his games are experiencing it.

While it doesn't go in more details with things such as existentialism, just having those elements here and there, I thought the writing got its job done of making me want to keep playing to see more of this world and characters. I have a soft spot for the intrigue and conspiratorial undertones of it, and yes I've never played a Taro game before.

I didn't expect to like this game as much as I did, I've been playing some games recently that made me fucking jaded, like how I didn't get scared and kinda dropped RE7 for a bit for now, tried Postal 2 and couldn't tolerate 30 minutes of its horrible combat.

The repeated dialogue stuff that's largely meaningless and clearly meant to get people to post memes to twitter is frankly the worst of the material in the game. Shitty light novel writers pandering at otaku write this way, not people that write award winning genius video game scripts. It's just pointless fluff same as FFXV only written in a dark and twisted way so 15 year old weebs think it's a work of genius since that's literally all it seems to take and if you repeat a line of dialogue like 50 times it sticks in their heads clearly. That and they maybe get to stare at 2B's ass in slow motion as the game locks you into walking during dialogue segments.

It's no excuse but at least it's not as bad as Drakengard 3's dialogue....except when it is. If nothing else at least the game introduced more people to the wonders of Akihiko Yoshida's art and Platinum killed it on the gameplay and world design front but man those are some low standards for writing quality all around for this game. It really does just seem like all you need for somebody to call you a genius anymore is act weird and write generic suffering anime narratives. Like aside from 2B's ass people's biggest takeaways from this game is going to be Taro Yoko's shit phoned in dialogue
