That's not a tower Shield, it's a Heater Shield. It's a reinforced wooden shield that's slightly larger. The main difference is it won't splinter immediately when an axe hits it due to the hardened leather covering and thicker wood.

Levied troops would fight with whatever they could be equipped with or, in worse (and less common) cases, whatever they could scrounge themselves. Swords still figured heavily as medieval combat was typically somewhat disorganized when compared to Rome and the Renaissance.
Outside of combat, swords were romanticized for different reasons. Swords were more expensive, but also more personal and permanent. Shields were basically interchangeable and disposable. Swords were a sort of fashion. Swords were also more portable and worn more often, so they served as a means of self defense. This actually persisted well into the 17th century as firearms were unreliable and heavy prior.

Spears are extremely effective if you have a group of dudes with you who also have spears. In a 1v1 sword and board vs spear and shield, the spear user is at a significant disadvantage because advancing on them is trivial. Of course, if it was sword only vs. spear only, than of course the spear has the advantage. But I'm not a fucking retard, so I'm not going to approach someone with a spear if I don't have a shield.

You are vastly underestimating the difficulty of maintaining composure enough to precisely poke a long sharp stick at someone charging with a shield up at full force to crash into you.

Real life is not mountain blade. A decent shield would be able to easily deflect a spear in such a way to make it
1. not stab me
2. much more difficult for you to maintain control of it.

Remember, I just have to get very close to you. Smashing into someone is orders of magnitude easier than defending yourself against such an attack. I'm not just trying to dickwave here. Like I said, I'd be buttfuck retarded to approach a spear unless the advantage was very, very clearly in my favor i.e. he is alone (biggest factor), I have a good sized shield (a buckler wouldn't do shit for me), the ground is generally clear of debris, etc.

That being said, in formation, a spear and similar weaponry with a shield is absolute undisputed king. Bayonets are still used today because of how effective they are, but of course, nobody cares a shield in warfare today, and the bayonet is STILL a last resort.

In single combat, the advantages that a spear has are basically negligible, assuming that the opponent is not completely retarded. But that goes without saying.

That's what makes these hypothetical situations impossible to discuss. There's too many factors that the discussers have to establish first, otherwise we're not really talking about the same thing. Even if I did have the clear advantage as I described, realistically I probably still wouldn't start the fight because there is a lot of risk involved in that. And I definitely wouldn't fight far. I'd much rather just ambush you in the night and set your tent on fire or stab you while you sleep.
