DAO was a highly flawed mess of a game that was nevertheless entertaining, and it promised to deliver much more on an eventual more polished sequel. Kind of like The Witcher 1. Except the witcher delivered on those promises in the sequel, while DA2 was a fucking joke.

DA:O actually offers a story and characters worth paying attention to and, unlike BG, a lot of RP freedom. Let's be frank here, BG was barely an RPG. It's a "let's gather my party and roam the country-side and see what adventures we can get into", the systems are all there, the world is fleshed out but the character interaction is dogshit. Like a GM you can't talk to and a table you can't RP with - you go from one railroaded encounter to the next and the world always treats you the same.

Dragon Age has aged worse than Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age was already outdated graphic and technology wise when it came out.
Plus now you have the enhanced edition of BG that makes it work flawlessly on modern pcs.

I'd say theres only one reason to like Dragon Age over BG and thats absolutely hating the D&D mechanics and prefering the DA custom ones.

DA2's focus on a much smaller story with a character driven narrative was actually a really good idea. They just fucked it up by presenting you with the same 3 environments, giving you choices that resulted in jack-shit and tried to cram 10 years of events into 3 10 hour acts. And i'm being extra charitable by ignoring all the logical inconsistencies and glaring plot holes. The basic premise was the great, just the execution was horrendous.

Except that isn't true, in BG you have the open world freedom plus the Irenicus storyline.
Sure, you maybe don't have the modern "your actions change the outcome" But DAO doesn't change that much either.

Most characters in BG are better than the ones in DAO and they react at your actions just like in DAO and they can even fight between them.

Same with NPCs in BG they react at whatever you have done, you can do things like losing your paladin status and people mention it and act accordingly.

With DAO Bioware tried to recreate BG in a modern way and they succeeded in a lot of things it definetly has the BG feel, but its worse storywise, contentwise and combatwise.

You're lumping BG1 in with BG2. Both are very different games when it comes to narrative, character interaction and story content.

What Bioware actually succeeded in was creating a AAA CRPG. You get the production quality of a modern story driven RPG with the, relatively, complex combat of handling multiple characters in a CRPG. No other company has even tried to do that. Maybe Obsidian with NWN2.

Witcher 3 could be a GOAT RPG if you could just roleplay. There's almost no dialogue options that matter and outside of a few questlines - like the fantastic one with that fat baron raping his wife - your choices don't matter.

That is what i meant with severely toned down the edge. You can't even be a jerk in the vast majority of conversations/quests let alone do you get to make evil decisions with lasting consequences..

The story of DA:O is mediocre at best and was only worthwhile when there was promise that it would continue and improve. Since DA2 and Inquisition have completely killed any hope that the plot will get better, the DA:O story remains dull, lifeless, generic, and uninteresting.
