bioshock was a good game but people focus on the story which was very mediocre. levine was more responsible for the story than he was the gameplay. same goes for system shock and thief. video game development is a collaborative effort that should not attributed to one man, especially when this man is given total creative control he makes utter shit (Infinite). he is the George Lucas of gaming. fuck off.

No, I got plenty of gameplay criticisms for you.

And actually, people used to love the story but regularly criticize the gameplay. That people recognize the story was bad is a recent phenomenon caused by re-examining it after the even worse Infinite.

And really, by "re-examining" I mean probably a few select people (likely from youtube) that kids like to borrow opinions from to sound smart on /v/.

every game has gameplay that is worthy of criticism

bioshock was a decent arena-esque shooter that didn't try too hard to be anything it wasn't. it was simple fun much like system shock. the story was mediocre but at the time it was released everyone lost their minds over wyk.

bioshock 2 was the best bioshock game for both fun gameplay and story.
>>

Wonder how he feels now knowing Elizabeth is like the number 1 character by a long shot used in every other source filmmaker porn animation including fucking dogs.

Also he's a total hack. Any hand he had in System Shock 2 or Thief must have been totally irrelevant compared to the other people involved. BioShock has always been the Mighty No. 9 to System Shock 2's Megaman.
>>
>>378739972

I'm guessing you're talking about the Infinite that never happened. I won't excuse it but they've admitted to having major overhauls halfway through production.

>LOST-tier writing
I'm guessing again with Infinite. He took a gamble with a subject and lost. One bad game to several good ones doesn't really make him bad.
>>
>>378740087
BioShock 1's story is a literal copypasta of System Shock 2's with characters and elements replaced. Gameplay-wise it's one of the most consolized pieces of shit to come out of the Xbox 360 era, made for consoles first and ported to PC without any care at all after.

The only people who actually liked BioShock when it was released were fucking total plebs who had never played any System Shock or even any Looking Glass Studios game before, when they were 11 years old getting BioShock for christmas and thinking it's the deepest shit ever and the most psychological piece of art to ever grace gaming.
>>
>>378740087

Infinite is more "arena-esque" than Bioshock ever was. Yes, lots of melee enemies coming at you in Bioshock, but there's nothing inherently "arena" about that. Bioshock is just a severely watered-down SS2. Not only does it water down mechanics, but it throws resources at you like candy making it trivial to deal with anything you come across. The only semblance of challenge was the first big daddy fight because the game still didn't throw overpowered crap at you at that point.

Infinite is like a sped up kawwa doody with rollercoasters and bullet sponge enemies. At least it's a little bit more challenging, especially at super-bulletsponge difficulty setting.

>>
>>378740759

I'll agree that SS1 is overrated, but SS2 definitely not. SS1 is lacking in atmosphere because the antiquated level design really hampers immersion, so unless you're into numbers and stats, there's little to find in this game.

Also, you can't just say something is "mediocre" without explaining why. If you explained why you think System Shock or Bioshit is a bad game, you'd probably get responses.
>>
>>378740759
Except both System Shock 1 & 2 are still both great games with amazing settings, stories and a high degree of gameplay complexity.

BioShock has always been shit, don't kid yourself into thinking you're the only "enlightened" one. Anyone who had gamed on PC before the release of BioShock in 2007 knew that games had only been getting less and less complex. If you think BioShock is shit and think System Shock is shit too then you're probably even disliking it for all the wrong reasons and should fuck off back to 9gag.
>>
>>378740908
Fuck off, SS2 has a shitty pulp story and terrible voice acting that you can't take serious. People liked it because it's a PC game and because it's a sci-fi RPG, nothing more.
>>

>I'll agree that SS1 is overrated, but SS2 definitely not. SS1 is lacking in atmosphere because the antiquated level design really hampers immersion, so unless you're into numbers and stats, there's little to find in this game.
t. has not played SS1

System Shock 1 not only has no numbers or stats (those were things introduced in System Shock 2), but it also has a wealth of atmosphere and the level design really, really isn't as antiquated or "maze like" as babbies who never played it seem to think.

You retarded babies all think you can just look at a screenshot of a map floorplan and call the game a maze.

The game had a fucking level designer, it's not some randomly generated shit like STRAFE. The levels and each rooms all have different textures, lighting, voxel objects, enemies, doors, objectives, Z-axis layouts (it's not Wolfenstein 3D). I played System Shock 1 for the first time when Enhanced Edition was released. The only real barrier to entry in that game was the antiquated controls prior to that (or the mouselook mod that I didn't have knowledge of before EE was released, go figure).

The game guides you perfectly through each area (important part of game design!!! it's why every game with complicated-looking maps from the era are not nearly as mazelike as they seem) and after about an hour of grasping the control scheme it becomes effortless to move throughout it. It's also scary as shit in places like the maintenance tunnels or the groves.

People who talk shit about SS1 and cite the maps/level design as the main reason have got to be some of the dumbest baiters on the internet because it just immediately tells me that they haven't ever even given the game a chance or they are simply too fucking dumb to navigate it even though it's made abundantly simple in the game.
>>
>>378741294
I'll add. If you want to see some real antiquated level design you should go look at Catacomb 3D or Wolfenstein 3D. Those are some games with truly antiquated level design that literally consist entirely of mazes for 90% of their gameplay (spoiler: because the games were not complex at all and that's the only way to mix things up, force the player to get lost constantly looking for keys).

System Shock 1's level design is much, much more comparable to Doom, it has a shitload of verticality to it and many recognizable features of each level throughout to aid the player in not getting lost. Hell, even Ultima Underworld did this stuff better than Wolf3D did. Doom & Doom II are extremely hard games to get lost in, same with Duke Nukem 3D, same with Blood, same with Shadow Warrior. They all have the "antiquated mazelike level design!" that people proclaim just by linking a single map screenshot.

People need to learn they can't just look at a fucking map screen and say "hurr it's a maze".
>>
>>378741549
I think you don't get their point. The games definitely, absolutely ARE mazes compared to 00s "corridor shooters".

I direct this at people (like the guy I quoted) that can apparently appreciate System Shock 2's level design but have never given System Shock 1 a chance because they saw [[[[this screenshot]]]] without any context as to what it is in the game.

This is the maintenance deck, the central square are dark atmospheric tunnels with dim lighting and invisible mutants, this connects to each of the four outer areas. The outer areas can only be accessed one at a time at different points in the story, they are simply for completing an objective within each. This is the only place in the game that even qualifies as "mazelike" and you still can't get lost in it because each of the areas are so small and split up and you'll be in and out of there in like a minute each.

This screenshot is enough to scare SS2/BioShock-only babbies off without a second thought.

>>
>>378742302
Right, but the original of this "maze" talk is not a misunderstanding. As you obviously know, the Western level design paradigm has changed dramatically in the 00s--from "maze" type levels (that's what they were called in the 90s too) to "corridor" & "setpiece" type levels where you walk into an encounter, play it out, run to the next "room", repeat. "Antiquated" has negative connotations, but if you as much as change it to a neutral "90s-style", the distinction becomes pretty accurate.

It's a shitty forced meme by some retards. Apparently on leddit when you need to make a new line you have to hit enter twice, a single space would be hitting enter three times and so on.

So naturally someone decides to force a meme about calling anyone that uses the totally normal act of email/forum single spacing a redditor. Naturally. Let's just forget that people have literally been doing that on this site for years and start calling it reddit spacing.

Now I'm being reminded I've been on this shithole for almost 10 years.
>>
>>378742579

But that's not what I meant by "antiquated". Perhaps "level design" was a poor choice of words because I meant aesthetics primarily. It's hard to get into SS1 because it's a whacky bunch of blocks lacking any concrete color palette. The game is going for realism but it looks like 3d Supaplex.

> It's hard to get into SS1 because it's a whacky bunch of blocks lacking any concrete color palette. The game is going for realism but it looks like 3d Supaplex.
But you're wrong? Have you even progressed out of like the first four rooms of the game? Each single level of citadel station has like 4 or 5 different color schemes that are unique to each type of area they are found in, fully textured walls and ceilings, plenty of open adjoining areas and larger areas.

Air ducts and maintenance tunnels can be a mixture of greys and browns, medical areas are in a cyan colour with many voxel objects placed throughout, hallways and adjoining areas on the medical deck are purple with large doorways high ceiling heights, areas with vegetation are usually brown-walled with green grass and trees/bushes, radioactive areas utilize a lot of red and black colours as well as different lighting across the board.

Really shit resolution image but only one I could find that fit what I mean.
>>
He might have had some interesting ideas, but like so many authors he lost any sense of direction. System Shock 2 was a great game (apart from some truly terrible enemy design and a really weak last chapters) and the story was pretty good too.

Bioshock had an interesting story - a little too similar to SS2's one, but clever. Shame about the rest of the game: you can see some pretty good ideas that just had to be neutered for budget and hardware restraints.
Infinite was a overproduced MESS. I don't know what really happened with the story: I can only assume that it got ripped into pieces, re-writen, messed and fucked up so many times that any semblance of meaning was ultimately lost: Either way, Levine clearly got completely over his head on that one. It clearly lacked direction, moderation, got bogged up in technical gimmicks and shit.

I'm pretty curious what will the next game look like. At this point it's pretty hard to see if Levine just got over-excited and lost a track of what matters, or if he is just a hack. I don't hold my highs up. But maybe the smaller scope and less awful hardware to work with will force him to pull his shit together once again.

And then within that, you got what? Every color under the sun crammed together with fullbright luminance. This isn't exactly an aesthetic choice made to withstand the test of time. Quake 1 and 2 feel less dated, for example. They just look less awkward today.

Not to say that the visuals lack charm, but there's next to nothing in the way of the intended horrific atmosphere or cold realism.

That was an aesthetic choice though. The only areas that look like "fullbright luminance" like in your pic are the medical areas with all the flashy lights and the healing beds, this is to guide the player towards those safer areas.

A ton of the areas in System Shock 1 are dark as fuck with darkness fog that comes in after a few meters, in-fact I'm pretty sure the area just outside of where that screenshot you posted is one of those kinds of areas. It's a dark purple hallway with multiple levels to it, slanted ceiling corners and voxel boxes across it on the Reactor deck or something.

The pic i'm posting is from the central area of the Maintenance deck, showing the darkness fog effect that many of the darker and more gloomy/atmospheric areas of the game have. This place is filled with invisible mutants that can destroy your shit.
