I think that upon release, a lot of a games audience is composed of people who have specific expectations of what they want/hope the game will be, which will mostly inevitably be let down because it's tantamount to guessing how a game will feel, control, be designed, etc

After that initial (loud) disappointment people who pick up the game have the benefit of buying something where they know what to expect. They've seen criticism, they've seen gameplay, they have an idea of what they're buying into that lines up much better with the actual product and so are more likely to be satisfied.
