Up until the scene being talked about where Makoto says that their dad would've supported the Phantom Thieves and Sae goes apeshit and calls Makoto a useless leech, every single scene they had together consisted of Sae just telling her to study and not get distracted by the news and Sae saying that her investigation went nowhere. That's exactly why that scene felt like it came out of nowhere, up until that point she said nothing of the sort.

No she doesn't. She says a couple times that Sae has changed and it gets elaborated on later on what she's referring to, and it's not the way Sae treats her.

Sae's a cunt but not for the reasons a few people here keep insisting is the case. Either that or people actually think she's just a cunt for telling Makoto to study a lot, I dunno. Or maybe they don't remember the specifics too well and are conflating the school principal hanging Sae's reputation over Makoto's head as something Sae did?

I dunno why people always ignore that bit. It's clear that this was what angered Sae because in the same conversation Sae says something to the effect of

She definitely went too far with what she said and Makoto wasn't really at fault (yeah she was told not to get distracted by the Phantom Thieves a few times earlier but it doesn't justify the reaction she got) but all the people who keep saying that Makoto was just making idle small talk and Sae exploded for no reason are incorrect and completely missing the relevance of the scene altogether.

All of these. I'm a Makotobro but even I recognize that a lot of people are overblowing Sae's outburst beyond that particular scene. She has issues to deal with yes, but it's not like she's out and out abusing Makoto.

Makoto's issues are more of a combination of the mounting pressure surrounding her i.e. Sae losing her way and venting her frustrations towards Makoto, the principal blackmailing her to investigate the PT, Akechi shitting on her in general, and the PT initially being aggressive towards her efforts to reach out.

Maybe it would've felt cheap/shoehorned in but it's still weird to me that the stuff about their dad never really gets elaborated on. Both Makoto and Sae talk about as if it were, and I assumed that we'd learn more about it either in Makoto's slink or during Sae's palace but it never happens. Maybe it's just me expecting something that I shouldn't have.

A Sae route would be fairly simple to actually work with.
Just add Sae into the earlier parts of the game to build non-social link flags with her, if you activate all those then at Social Link 10 just find Sae again, do a couple more non-social link events and BLAMO, you can keep the social link part without messing it up but still get the Sae route.
