I mean, it's decent. I enjoy the game quite a bit, but I wouldn't say it's the best (actually I wouldn't say any of them are the "best", stories are fairly subjective). It kinda bites off more than it can chew towards the end, many of the FF titles tend to do this.
I think they got carried away with the Yu Yevon/all Yevon is evil/all the Maesters are in on it nonsense and should've just left Seymour as the main antagonist AND final boss. It's the same with FF9 (which I also really enjoy). Kuja was a fine and interesting antagonist for roughtly 3 discs, and then all of the sudden you're in space and there's another planet and the last boss is a...tree or something. Sometimes just keeping it simple throughout is perfectly fine imo.

None of the Maesters were evil except Seymour though. Hell, Seymour KILLS two out of three other Maesters, and the last one was just trying to keep people happy and commits sudoku when he thinks all hope of defeating Sin is lost.

As for FFIX, Kuja is still the final and main villain even if not the actual final boss.

If you dislike raising the stakes and complexity in your stories, maybe stick to simpler games, there's nothing wrong with text-heavy JRPGs doing stuff like this.

I mean if you want to look at Square's overall health, as a company I would say that it's the healthiest in general, it makes good decisions as a publisher and has stakes in other stuff the balances out it's company's portfolio like, like manga and merch, I think when people talk about how Square is getting to the point of no return, they're usually talking about they're 1st party stuff, they've taken a page from western development because they were scared of being left behind and it's only done poorly for them, they've lost the quality control that came with the Japanese process, I don't think I've ever seen such a ubsurd amount of chaos coming from their internal development teams then I've seen in the last 10 years. It's only a second hand view of what's going on, but you see people leaving all the time, employees speaking out saying they have no idea what's going on and their managment having all kinds of trouble and scurrying to keep them on projects, it's a huge mess.

This is by far the biggest offender on your list. Yuna is a shallow, stupid character. Tidus is insufferable and annoying as fuck. Kimari has no personality at all. Riku is somewhat interesting, but never develops into anything or changes. Wakka is a fucking retard who suffers from much of the same problems Tidus does. Lulu has no personality. Auron is cool. Seymore is decent, but not too threatening or believable.

The worst part of the game, bar none, is the garbage aesthetic. The game is ugly. Spira is ugly. Everything about the art and concept is ugly as sin.

I was left wishing I'd played as Jecht with Braska and Auron. That game looked fun. Fuck this feminine, whiny, arrogant idiot character.
