"Getting something" from a game does not necessarily entail the game to have a good story. It just means the moral or message behind the game has to be good and make you 'think' about something you hadn't previously thought of. You don't need a good story to do this.

MGS2 did this, the persona franchise does this, literally any TeamICO game does this, etc.
