How would you design a game to specifically fuck over speedrunners?
>>
>>378695141
Dead Rising 1
>>
>>378695141
Unskippable cutscenes.
>>
>>378695141
its easy to do, you just make 99% of the game RNG
>>
If you finish the game in a certain amount of time (the number changes each time) it starts you over
>>
I'd hit the speedrunners in the hands with a hammer.
>>
Unskippable cutscenes
Timed protection/defense missions
Arbitrary item quotas to progress that only replenish after a set in-game time
>>
>>378695141
make walking speed the same as original NES DW1/2/3/4
>>
RNG-Based core mechanics.
Eg. The distance you jump is random each time.
>>
Introduce a strong as fuck boss that can only be damaged by a special command; the damage dealt being proportionate to your level.
>>
>>378695141
Make it a game nobody wants to play
>>
>>378695404
This. Everything would be randomized. Randomized movement speed, randomized damage, randomized enemy spawns, randomized time limit, etc.
>>
Sometimes enemies you have to kill run away from you for 30 seconds. This is completely random.

Normal players wouldn't mind much, but over the course of the whole game, this would add up to several minutes of time that's purely random. Getting a good time would require running the game hundreds of times until RNG doesn't screw you, no matter how good you are.
>>
Add a door at the very end that only opens after a certain amount of time has passed. This time is extended the sooner you reach it. If you glitch past the door, you are instantly killed because a certain sit of invisible triggers need to be activated.

Also, inputs are randomly ignored and animations are randomly sped up or slowed down, including the associated hit/hurt boxes.
>>
>>378695141
I would fill it with RNG. Really devastating RNG that could make or break a run.
>>
>>378696161
>>378695876
>>378695618
>>378695404
Honestly, this doesn't fuck over speedrunners that badly because most of them try to get the world record time. They'd just restart until they win. Trust me, I used to watch a lot of binding of isaac.
>>
whole game is like that buzz light year roller coaster where you shoot enemies as you fly by

Game would always be the same length and only accuracy would be used to determine score
>>
Include a hidden story path that's mostly just irrelevant padding if they reach a certain point in the game fast enough.
If they glitch past anything, have a flag check 80% of the way in that will reset their progress if it detects anything that was skipped.
>>
Make every level in a 2D game like those autoscrolling levels where you can't move past the cameras view of the screen.
>>
>>378695334
perfect
>>
Just add checks to every boss/special pick up normally required to complete the game, to make sure they at least have to do everything.
>>
The entire point of the game is to get a password to enter in the room you wake up in. There are no collectibles, you only gain knowledge such as passwords. And there is no binary state that can be seen as "obtaining a password", since they are woven into the game's environment.

Therefore any% speed runs take two seconds and miss the whole point of the game. And 100% speed runs are undefinable.
>>
The last level has a cutscene that plays on loop until the game timer reaches a specific amount of hours, then have a single player interaction requirement to start the credits.

Why would you design a game specifically to fuck over speedrunners?

Where did they touch you on the doll, Anon?
>>
>>378697247
They'd still compete on the boss though. You need a time based ending cutscene so that all players finish at the same time
>>
>>378697420

I'm 40+ hours in and only just got Futaba, I've not played a game this long in forever, I've forgotten what it's like.

This is old school "lasts for months playing everyday" style RPG and I'm digging it.
>>
>>378695141
Already done. Try speed running Animal Crossing.
>>
The game gets longer by 5 minutes by stretching certain obligatory hallways each time you start the program/start a new game. The game requires an internet connection at start up/when you pass through those hallways and stores your time delay on your online account so that you can't edit it. The only way to achieve the best time is do a perfect run on a brand new copy so if you want to speedrun it you have to pay the developers another $40 for every record attempt.
>>
>>378695141
RNG absolutely will not stop someone from restarting until they get a good run (or finding ways to manipulate the RNG). Unskippable cutscenes have never stopped people from speedrunning.

The only thing that would stop a speedrunner is if 100% of the game is an auto-scroller; no menus, no dialogue mashing, just auto-scroller from the time you hit start until the credits. Then you instead have people gunning for the highest score possible, etc. So basically, there is no way to stop autistic people from being autistic with your game.

that's where tool-assisted speedruns come in handy
>>
Make sure there are no glitches which enables someone to clip through walls, floors, ceilings or doors.

Make sure bunny hopping isn't a thing in the game.

Make sure havoc physics based object acceleration via collision bug is fixed.

None of these will truly kill speedrunning, but it will make it so none of them can finish the game hours before a regular player can.

just make a game with hours of autoscrolling before any part that actually requires skill. basically something like the first day in MM where it takes like 20 minutes to beat, but there's simply nowhere to save time, so it becomes a mindnumbing chore if you ever need to restart your run.

Make a David Cage "game" where the entire game is a scripted QTE. Nothing to manually interact with, nothing to exploit, just a slog of fixed inputs at fixed times, with the results of the QTE having a fixed execution time whether successful or failed. The game automatically finishes in X amount of time. No 'finished' play through can last longer or shorter than said amount. If you finish the game beforehand, the game forcibly makes you do dull, grindy tasks until the time reaches X where the game then ends. If everyone has the same amount of time per playthrough, everyone's a winner.

make 90% of the game actually very friendly to speed running, with designer implemented exploits, sequence breaks, and minimal rng. then, for the last level or two, ramp up the rng and add frame perfect jumps and sequence breaks in which failure results in massive, unavoidable back tracking, causing completion to take longer than if you just completed the level normally.

runners can't help but be as efficient as possible. result, possible wr runs would often be ruined at the last minute by bullshit difficulty, leading to screams and broken controllers.

Any popular RPG will have a large speed commuity built around it. Every main series Final Fantasy has many, many runners and there are semi-regular speedrun relays of the entire series that last for DAYS. There's an AGDQ-style marathon every year called RPG Limit Break consisting solely of RPGs where almost every block is a 3+ hour run. It's insane. But it makes for good background noise, so I've been listening to quite a lot of Kingdom Hearts runs lately, since most of the best runners of that series generally avoid sperging out when things go poorly.

>no Quick Load or Quick Save
>If you try to quickly skip through an NPCs dialogue, they stop and scold you for not listening, then proceed to repeat themselves at half speed with unskippable text.
>>
a lot of these ideas just sound like bad game design things that would annoy casual players and speed runners alike
>>
Make tranny jokes.
>>
>>378695141
By making it a gacha-based mobile game with a stamina bar and no true end.
>>
>add a luck stat
>if it's not high enough, random chance to drop an airplane on the player, killing them

no bustas allowed
>>
If you don't want a game to have a speedrunner fanbase, just do the most annoying shit possible.

>Make the bosses only accessible on certain times
>penalize the player by slowing the character down if they go too fast in an area
>Give it retarded RNG level design so that they can't have certain places memorized by pitfall placement, monsters, pathing, etc
>have collectibles that you can only gather to 100% the game after the credits roll
>give the character an 80 year old man's stamina, so after 2 seconds of sprinting he has to rest for 5 minutes
>make the game impassable unless you clear tutorials and minigames

And of course, skipping cutscenes is not only disabled, but if you hit ANY button while the cutscene plays, it will repeat back to the beginning of the cutscene
>>
>>378695141
Make it so that the game has a bell curve difficulty where it's most difficult if you skip everything and just as difficult if you 100% (enemies scale with you, higher percentage means higher difficulty mode and AI shenanigans). Thus they have to puss out on grabbing some stuff that wastes time in order to make the speedrun possible.

Also deliberately program in crashpoints near the ending. Some for using specific strats, some that randomly happen. All crashes wipe saves.
>>
I know most of this is just joking around but
>ever intentionally alienating potential players from buying your game

If anything, I'd include a separate speedrun mode which auto-skips cutscenes, reduces non-gameplay animations, etc. and include it in the marketing for the game.
>>
>>378709416
>And of course, skipping cutscenes is not only disabled, but if you hit ANY button while the cutscene plays, it will repeat back to the beginning of the cutscene
That's a good idea, here's another:

If you beat a level on one of the 59 frames of the 60 frames in a second, you immediately restart the level. The frame that allows you to beat the level is randomized every second.
>>
>>378707620
Wow.

I had this idea once where a game increases the difficulty the faster you complete it. Basically if it detects you going too fast it starts to shit on you until you slow down.

You realize this kind of idea wouldn't work, right? They would just find the exact threshold at which they can play the game without it fucking them, or figure out which areas it's worth it to take the hit to complete fast, etc. It would just become part of their routing.

yes, that is why i need to pair it with several ideas that manipulate the player in some way. Unfortunately you don't see this kind of AI because its difficult to design a punishing time lengthening system and yet still be fun somehow.

Maybe some sort of time power that the slower you go, the weaker your level becomes, but in return the game gets easier, and the faster you go, the stronger the enemies become. Might be cool.

>Exclusively to fuck with speedrunners

Dialogue like custom robo where every letter makes an annoying sound
Make it compatible for multiple controllers so they have to argue about that
Make boss fights trivial with certain items they pick up, or a complete pain in the ass without them
Make it so you lose complete control of your character if you get hit or fall like in La Mulana
Make going through the inventory 20% faster than the other menus
Make it so they have to go out of their way for the faster route that makes them end up wasting time either way

Basically I would just fill it with a ton of really minor things that would piss off anyone that spent hours trying to perfect their understanding of the game.

Instead, how about a chance to run for 5 - 12 seconds, with a % chance to only run for 2 seconds, just to mix it up.

Damn, Anon that's actually pretty good.
But they'd probably fuck with the game mechanics to figure out the "warp" to the final area anyway

>final boss is unkillable unless you have several items in your inventory, which are gotten via normal progression

Everybody's putting hard limits, I say continuously scale the difficulty of each level/section inversely with the time taken for the last section (so if you absolutely sped through the last level, you're probably fucked in the next one)
>>
Real-time clock which makes places and items accessible only at certain times of the year. You can't beat the game unless you have items available several months apart.
>>
>>378712990
there's a game where an item's only available after like a month after the game's started. Some dumbass did a 100% run for it, or something
>>
>>378712386
to this day no one has figured out how to get past the barrier on hyrule in Wind Waker. Which is pretty much what the anon described
>>
>>378713705
Someone found a way past it in WWHD like a month or two ago

I thought OPs suggestion was to just discourage speedrunning but half of the shit in this thread would be infuriating for normal players as well. A game being fast paced and fun to play through if you're good at it shouldn't be discouraged.
