Why haven't you made your dream game, anon?
>>
Because I'm dumb

I'm working on it. Shit takes time.

It's even harder when you have a full time job. I almost want to make a kickstarter just so I can work on it as much as I can without a job in the way.

Good vidya can't be made on an 'indie' (misnomer: the smaller the finance, the less control/independence you have over the project) budget. Not even mediocre vidya can.

I'm trying.
I'm starting from zero though. I'm binging on Unity and Blender tutorials at the moment.

i've looked into the programming language, did a few tutorials on the basic keyword syntax stuff.
but i have no idea how i can use those things to make something like disgaea

You're right my dude. I'm not even a stranger to working on projects for a long time. I worked on a tabletop RPG homebrew massive rulebook for over an entire year. I could do the same for a game, it's just starting that is the hard part.

The other issue is having never made a game before my first instinct is to want to make my dream game naturally, which is stupid.

I believe it was the Super Metroid lead developer who suggested that the right way to balance difficulty was that the developer should be able to clear the fight without getting hit once.

Given his mastery of the mechanics and knowledge of the patterns/weaknesses/etc., if he couldn't reliably clear the boss without being hit it meant the boss wasn't a fair challenge for a player who didn't have intimate knowledge of the game.

You balance Hard mode to be an enjoyable challenge for yourself, since it's meant as a skill check for advanced/experienced players.

Not really possible in a turn based rpg unless there's dodge mechanics like Mario and Luigi.

>>
>>378693374
Don't. Keep your job. There is an over-saturation of indie games already. You have to sell a lot of games to be able to quit your full-time job after your e-begging money runs dry.
>>
>>378700179
Then download music making software
are you retarded?
>>
>>378699637
those effects are just so minor it needs to be more intense. Enemies should look like they're having epileptic seizures when they're hit and the effects should cover the entire screen.
>>
>>378699936
That's definitely an interesting insight, but I'm not sure it always applies. Not every dev is a twitch gamer. "Knowledge of the game" can cover for a great deal, but there will absolutely be gamers out there who will crush top scores just on the strength of lightning reflexes.

So, yeah, good advice, but also know your audience. If your aiming at kids and casuals, turn it down; If you want the Dark Souls fanboys, make something even you can't beat.

he's trolling. honestly put more into the animation and momentum of enemies giving reactions to being hit. the effects right now aren't perfect but you can tell that is all that is what is mainly being focused on. it looks awkward right now because the enemies are basically lifeless and the animations are not fluid enough.

Took me a while to figure out how to start the game. The start level button doesn't change when you hover or click it.
Some neat level ideas though they're pretty difficult for mechanics that only get used once. The squish on the ball when it bounces seems overly excessive.
Also I get this crash trying to continue to the next level.

>Took me a while to figure out how to start the game. The start level button doesn't change when you hover or click it.

Sorry to hear that! One of those things you get used to as the developer, especially when most of the other buttons there also change in some noticeable fashion. I added a border-colour change when the player hovers over it.

>Some neat level ideas though they're pretty difficult for mechanics that only get used once.

I don't disagree, but I feel uncomfortable making copies of the level that are deliberately watered-down. That's the level design ideal, introducing the gimmick and then adding to it throughout the game, but when I do it, it seems very inorganic. For me the first two stages of this game should be enough to key the player in on the basic gameplay (bounce, parry, aim your shots), then the rest of the game amps up with surprises.

>Also I get this crash trying to continue to the next level.

I fixed it so it referred to the right variable. Won't be an issue in future. Sorry it bugged your playthrough.

I've talked to one of Blizzard's 3d modelers, whenever they have to make clothes they literally copy from leyendecker, and I mean it in the literal sense, stroke by stroke although in 3D of course.
Before the 18th century, copying the masters was what everyone was doing. With the Romanticism came the moral concept of plagiarism, but do you really think it's over? WoW is an EQ clone with better graphics, it's not an artistic copy but it's a design copy. And it worked for them.
The cast whole cast from LoL (at least the original one as I am not up to date with their patches) has been copied with their names changed a little.
Don't plagiarize but learn to copy. That dude's art is some of the best on this thread, he should make that style his own.

If you're looking at UE4 or Unity, then no not really. Both should suffice. Unity has a lot more , and imho better, documentation and larger community (colleges use it with game dev majors).

But making an isometric game is just a matter of moving your game camera. And then pausing gameplay while still selecting options.

I was once told to shut the fuck up and just do it

It didnt help too much but I did make a discord server exclusively to dump all my scrambled ideas into one place

Puts pressure on you to fill channels with SOMETHING

Because I'm retarded and my dreams are way beyond the scope of anything I can make by myself.

Actually, it's probably better to make sure your model deforms properly and make any changes to the mesh before you start unwrapping and texturing.
Otherwise you'll have to redo any bit of your texture/UV map that has been changed.

Prefer making small, personal mods to change existing games to my tastes. For instance, made a mod for New Vegas that improves poisons.

Good work, I've been checking out your progress on r/unity3d and here

>>378718704
Good visuals, glad to see it's coming along

>>378719103
Now make it 'steam' worthy and you'll have twitch players all over it

>>378714118
Any more details? Even ideas you're thinking about for it are fine.

>>378715328
What kind of game are you doing? Looks like an ice golem about to go Mike Tyson on you.

the character animates in-engine
the face is a circular sprite and the body is a separate object that serves as a mask
the face sprite rotates according to the player's horizontal speed, and the body squishes with movement as well

i have faith in this project, but idk what to expect honestly

I rarely post there. If you want to see updates, I usually post first on http://hypertensiongamedev.tumblr.com/, and I repost that content in TIGSource and the official Unity forums

nice work anon, will the cape be simulated in unity?

Good luck, but it looks like a porn game. Most porn games on Steam are typically low effort VNs that are just stories with choices.

I want to make a game based on being a blacksmith, with a semi open world system integrated around it where primarily you can source your own metals or buy them, and inherit your smithery from whomever family. Not sure what the graphics would be, but it'd have an in depth system on making the swords themselves, and your quality of metal is dependent on real world methods back then in the medieval period. Could have special requests at later stages from the king, or rich buyers, or evil antagonists who later use your blade to kill other people like the king. You would be able to upgrade your smithery as time went on, but you begin the game with a worn down one after <family member> is drafted during the large war and it falls into disrepair, which gives you a good incentive to make shitty swords at the beginning as most of the population after the war have a lack of arms. Mite b kool. I'd make sure it's extra comfy, but no idea where I'd start.
>>
>>378721812
the only want to make a game about being a blacksmith interesting is by making it unrealistic, unless you have some crazy gameplay simulation of forging and metal-shaping or something
>>
>>378712283
make sure to have other people test play your levels and get feedback from them, i'm sure you already do but if you're not it will help alot
Looks great btw, have a title name yet?

>>
>>378722145
That is precisely what I would do, metal shaping, forging. It'd be somewhat simulator-like, even autistic depending on how deep you choose to go into your metal quality. You would work a whole smeltery/smithy for a small town and eventually have money to move to larger towns, a city, etc and I would tailor it specifically for /v/ as far as autism goes. I'd probably die of old age working on it since I want to have slightly good graphics, 3D world, and high immersion. No microtransactions.

I'm having this plan on making simple shit. Like at first, Pong, then maybe space invader and then a platformer, then whatever. But for some reason I'm always afraid of making that step

I've been following your progress for some time. Your game looks good, but the art needs some work. The colors are weird and the girl looks a bit... off. Like when west tries to do anime.
