Both Lisa the First and Lisa the Joyful are atrocious. "Lisa" (a.k.a. "Lisa The Painful") is a great game that stands on its own as a classic and falls apart when it has either of its two shitter brothers around.

Don't listen to these goofballs, the DLC is good. It clears up details about the larger story while giving a good end to Buddy's side of things. The two big problems are that Buddy herself becomes super edgy, and as long as you know how to time attacks well enough, combat can be boring. But for what you get, it is still worth a play.

I played Lisa the Painful. I skipped the beach resort because I had no idea what to do and was antsy.

Should I play through again on hard mode and then try out lisa the joyful?

it is a pretty antsy area, yeah. like i said before, playing the First would enhance a lot of your love for the game because a lot of the designs you see there are taken from it. i would play through again on hard mode as it allows you to explore more story areas, like the Joy factory, as well as give you more insight past the ending.
i also urge you to thoroughly explore any area in which you can hear a trumpet in the background once you have a bike.

Not the same guy, but how many variations of the after-credits scene are there? I'm on my first playthrough but I'm not that far in and I haven't used any joy yet. Do you have to use a lot of Joy for it to effect the ending, or does it change even if you use it only a few times?

there's an ending for using any amount of joy, an ending for never using joy and then the pain mode ending overrides anything you do. no reason to not use joy if you're attempting that.

One if you never use joy and one if you finish the game in Pain mode. I do believe you can only get one at a time, so if you went joyless and pain mode you would only get the normal ending + the pain mode ending, not the joyless one.

Also, Joyful is really not that bad. I'd say it's pretty good, it has many memorable moments, but the lack of party members is really what brings it down.
Story is good but only if you 100% the painful and know everything that's going on, or else you're just going to wonder why Rando is still alive, or why Buzzo kept Brad, etc.

Story is terrible if you know anything about Painful. Terrible retcons. Shoves facts that were cleverly disguised in the first game straight in your face. Buddy's characterization is stupid. It retroactively ruins Painful.

Lisa the Joyful helps to give closure for Brad and Buddy's relationship

You can't change the way story goes in LISA at all. Your choices only affect gameplay and achievements. If you finish the game without taking Joy at all, you get a bonus dialogue after credits, that's it. And if you finish the game on Pain Mode, you get bonus cutscene.

The Joyful is fine. It's clearly rushed and gameplay is kinda lacking, but the soundtrack is top-notch as usual and bosses are great aesthetically. The ending is fantastic and clearly the thing that was polished the most in the game. There are some people who hate Buddy's characterization, but it feels like that they simply forgot that it was established in Painful that she has a joy addiction.

Are Pointless and Hopeful worth checking out? I wanted to look into them, but I hate getting invested in games that aren't finished.

Brad did nothing wrong. He was right all along since if all the fuckers he came across would have just listened to him or never betrayed him everything would have at least turned alright for the most part. there is no good ending. it's called "the painful rpg" for a reason my dude. also don't listen to what other people say about skipping the joyful dlc, it's still good and does wrap up the story somewhat, it's just not nearly as good as the base game. the music is pretty top notch in it though

Buddy's edginess is not easy to watch, but it makes sense for her character arc. She's basically going full edge because she doesn't know how else to act and survive, and it's the player's input that helps decide whether she'll mature and get past her problems, or succumb to them.

I know the trolling nature of the game is emulating The Painful, but it's at a point where I find it more frustrating than gratifying.
