More pleasant to look at, hit and miss on the sound aspect but usually not offensive, and most games don't differentiate between the sexes mechanically (stats, etc) so there's really no reason not to play female characters. I nearly always play as male characters. In RPGs with extensive character creation, I'll usually make multiple characters with extensive backstories I make up before making a female character.
If I end up making a second character in a Monster Hunter game, I'll make it female so I can try out the other half of the armors.
I've always played the male trainer in Pokemon games, but with most games giving the female trainer more extensive customization options I might eventually try a female trainer. I tend to use more male Pokemon, but don't mind using female depending on the Pokemon.
In games with a diverse cast of characters to choose from, I'll generally gravitate more towards male characters, but I'll likely play the entire roster and stick with whoever I find the most fun gameplay wise. Peach, Sheik, and Jigglypuff are all characters I enjoy a lot in smash games.
