I think the thing that made this game seem so much better than its sequel (aside from the sequel generally having weaker gameplay in spite of the fact that combat controls were superior) is that the ruins were all interconnected. The ones in MML2 were all too linear and had no replay value whatsoever, whereas you could casually wander into a portion of the ruins you already cleared in MML1 after getting a handful of powerups if you just ignored the map and explored how you wanted. It made such a small setting seem so much bigger than THE ENTIRE FUCKING GLOBE

It's a decent RPG, but it's a port of two Dreamcast games and the first game got neutered hard (The dungeons are generic and they all use the Blaze Ruins theme, some cutscenes are missing, animations for cutscenes either come from the second game or are missing in general) it kinda blew my mind just how much the first game got cut.
Still, if you can't get a Dreamcast emulator to work or get the original game , then look up a playthrough of the first game on Youtube. I heard the second game is mostly intact, so there's that.

This game had the most predictable story I've ever seen in my life. I watched my friend's brother play through it when I was in high school and predicted every single plot point.

Very fun game, though.
