what's the opinion on the axe? It's my main right now and I just finished the Shadows of Yharnam with it. I really like the moveset (only use it 2 handed) and I'm a strength build. I also have a decently levelled kirkhammer, because of the str scaling, but i really hate the hammer and the short is too short even though i like the thrust

Whatever you want. Saw Cleaver isn't much fun, but it gets the job done. Axe is more fun with it's more varied moveset and the high health regain. But you should really try each weapon at least once.

Go Str if you already did a skl build, or go arcane. Arcane is really fucking fun. I did an arc playthrough after 200h and 5 characters and it felt like I was discovering the game a second time

Sure the Axe is easy to use and just R1 spam, but you at least have the option to try mixing your gameplay up because it has different moves when tricked/untricked. With the Cleaver you don't even have that option. No matter what enemy or situation you're going to spam R1, maybe with an L1 here and there.

That doesn't make any sense. All weapons can use the pistol since they are all one-handed when they are untricked, and it's not really a merit. The Axe provides an alternative to this. That would be a merit.

Nah, charged R2 takes a lot more time to execute, deals lower damage and forces the player to remain in one spot for a longer time, while adding the risk of taking increased damage. Parry is fast, can be preformed from a safe distance, deals heavy damage and is incredible easy to abuse by spamming with almost zero risk attached.
