I don't really follow SMT4 threads or the opinions on them, but Mikado is so dull. The tower leading to Tokyo is basically a 2 hour tutorial dungeon, with the only highlight being the Minotaur fight which really isn't all that special either.

I don't want to sing praises to SMTIV since I think it's average at best, but the best parts are in the bulk of Tokyo. The only time the game becomes a real slog is if you do a neutral playthrough and have to do the ~15 sidequests it makes you do to become the champion.

I'm actually trying to get that ending at the moment, and I've been completing sidequests left and right after not doing them for the entire game, but I keep getting stuck on the 5th position of the rankings.

Any tips about which sidequests I should be aiming for?

There are a few sidequests you have to talk to specific NPCs to obtain, honestly I would just look up a guide to find them and the sidequests you actually have to do. The game gives you almost no indication of 'you have to talk to generic hunter guy in this far off easy-ass dungeon area to unlock this mandatory Lv. 10 side quest', I can only imagine the headache of a neutral walkthrough with no help. Probably why they make it such a bitch to lock into it.

If you play normally the difficulty lets up slightly, but you'll probably still die on the regular. I'm in Infernal Tokyo and bosses still regularly kick my ass. Regular encounters less so, usually due to a fucking smirk son of a bitch.
