It didn't seem like a joke to me. The characters treated it as novel and weird -- sure, some characters gave shit to that one kid for getting with her -- but that's pretty in line with how mainstream culture views trannies as a whole. Casually disregarding; unpreferred. The character, herself, was pretty normal and nothing about her really made it clear that she was born a dude.
