Playing through it right now. Great game. Own the original as well. Overall 3DS provides additional content and QoL features.

In this day and age I would say buying a 3DS simply for this one game (and maybe fire emblem) is dumb. Just buy a 3DS, SD card, and mod it. Then use the Freeshop to download any 3ds content you want.
