Cenobites weren't originally demons but simply dimensional BDSM travelers who pain and pleasure had blurred too much for them to tell one from the other. They weren't even really evil at first either. The sequels is what made them generic bad demons from hell. Still though it would've been nice had Pinhead appeared at the end of Freddy vs Jason like they intended.

Doug Bradley refused to play Pinhead in these last movies because of disagreements. Doug himself wants to write Pinhead's lines and behavior, since the original, he and Barker agreed that Pinhead had a specific personality and he was only going to play Pinhead with that personality.
