No it isn't. I got 8-packs of AA Eneloops for $10 off Amazon a few years ago. I haven't had a single Eneloop fail in the ~10(?) years I've been running them. They all still work perfectly, even though I think the first gen of them were only rated for 1000 charges.

Wait till China stops making them and runs out. I had to buy a replacement DS Lite battery a year or so ago, and the stock had dried up somehow. I had to pay $15 for a shitty one.
