Dubstep never became mainstream.
The mainstream became aware of dubstep, but it's a stretch to say it was ever something that wasn't popularly ridiculed (rightly so).

Also synthwave isn't really useful as a genre, because it encompasses vastly different techniques all under one umbrella. The only similarity between most synthwave artists is that they use synth.

It would be like calling everything past the 19th century jazz or some other nonsense because it doesn't follow conventional classical music standards.
