>“Obsidian did a great job of capitalising on the timing of Kickstarter and the wave of nostalgia for these type of titles,” goes his hypothesis. “We've seen that most of the titles after Pillars of Eternity, if you look at Wasteland, Torment - they haven't been anywhere near that kind of success. So maybe it's that a lot of nostalgia fed into the initial bubble and that's why. These games have a market, but it's never gonna be that peak [again].”

>Wester shoulders the responsibility for Tyranny’s marketing, which ran with the slogan: 'Sometimes, evil wins.' It was an approach that wisely brought Tyranny’s twist on RPG morality to the fore - but didn’t touch so much on its singular world and cast.

Huh. I wonder who Obsidiots will blame for Tyranny flopping.

>Pillars of Eternity is great
>Sells well
>Sequel gets successfully funded
>Tyranny is garbage
>Sells badly
Woah, really makes you think.
>>
>>378618176
Is it any surprise? The only reason New Vegas was a success was because it had the Fallout name attached to it, and even then it underperformed when compared to Fallout 3. Obsidian are a bunch of hacks who only get praise from /v/ because it's fun to shit on Bethesda.
>>
>Western talent is busying themselves trying to replicate the 90s

why
>>
>>378618415
Because the 90's were the best time for video games - too bad these fags are hacks and lack the talent to make something as good as something from the 90's
>>
>>378618176
I've read this, like, a week or two ago.

>>378618346
>Pillars of Eternity is great
>Sells well
This is a very dangerous use of logical implication. It sold well because of the Kickstarter hype and alleged pedigree of Sawyer&co. I wouldn't call it great; in fact, before the patches it was nothing but mediocre. It has become decent after the expansion, but the bulk of sales had happened by then, so it doesn't apply to your argument.

>Tyranny is garbage
>Sells badly
Tyranny was passable, not outright garbage. And it sold badly from the eyes of executives, it has ok sales for a niche RPG in a fresh setting. It sold badly in the context of Obsidian and the leviathan than it has become in terms of number of employees and their location (which forces a specific sales threshold)

>>378618349
The world doesn't spin around /v/, anon. Obsidian gets deserved praise for NV in many forums that are dedicated to old-school RPGs and are thoughtful of proper game design in many countries and languages (I can attest for Poland, Russia, and Japan).
>>
Imagine being so addicted to (You)s that you post the same threads almost daily.

That said, Tranny was shit and I'm glad Obsidian are failing.
>>
>rpg codex shitters direct linking their cancerous shit hole website
go back to the fucking hole you crawled from you fucking cuck

How many times are you going to make this exact word for word thread?
It's getting pathetic.
>>
>>378620104
You think that's pathetic?

What if I told you that if you look at the catalog right now, there are about 6 of his threads?

I rather enjoyed Pillars of Eternity. Especially how it had a good focus in the dlcs on to what degree do you hold on to and remember the past and what is the right amount to assist in your life. When do you forgive yourself too much? Forget too much. Remember too much. The main quest in the base game also had a good message on perseverance and to what degree are you willing to harm others for the sake of uplifting a goal or your desired community. To what degree should you be the prince Machiavelli would of wanted? Also had a good message on how religion can be a powerful and wonderful thing, but at what cost? Also, it shines light on its likely pure human roots despite it powerful affect.

I've played the first act of Tyranny and have found myself getting bored of it as I don't like how forced I am down this path of choosing between nazi wannabies and thugs. It feels alot more linear than other rpgs and more like a telltale game. Illusion of choice with only different wallpaper being the end result. Although I do like how it may be going down the road of, "You can still make a difference and bring light in the darkest of situations." Does it get better? Do I get more options later on? Is it interesting?
>>

The archive really is a blessing.

>>
>>378620714
Haven't played PoE yet, though I will after Tyranny.

As far as I've gathered, at the end of act 1, the story can diverge to 3 different paths. After that, on either side you can decide what zones you want to visit, what problems to solve. In act 2, you have the choice to just go fuck all, an anarchist route as I've learned.

The ending is basically you become the archon of the tiers, vith varying differences on the regions you were in
>>
I actually enjoyed Tyranny much more than Pillars. The story in pillars felt way too familiar, I got bored like 20 minutes in. Tyranny kept my attention the whole way through and it just felt all around more interesting.
>>
>>378618176
Are you getting paid to post this every single day?
>>
Why is this link posted so often with the same quoted text every time? I get the point, they screwed the pooch with the Tyranny shit, but holy fuck, stop spamming the same threads every other fucking day.
>>
>>378618868

>tyranny was passable

Tyranny was unadulterated trash you fucking mongoloid. It was so many leagues beneath the quality of Pillars of Eternity (whose quality itself was already the subject of dispute here) that it's not funny.
>>
>>378618176
Why is this thread posted so often? Is it a meme? I don't get it
>>
>>378624078
It is always hilarious to see how modern "gamerrrs" such as yourself view titles through a lens of 10/10 reviews and game journos which equate 7/10 to "trash".

You know what games are trash? "What The Heck, Dude?", or "P-Walker's Simulation", or "Uplands Motel: VR Thriller", or thousands, literally thousands of trash games on Steam. Saying Tyranny is
>unadulterated trash
is narrow-minded and just shows that you know jack shit about the industry.

It is idiots like you, who were probably born in late 90s or even later, and go with the flow and console hype that blur all the fucking borders between genres and evaluation since you played 2.5 games recommended by a favourite youtuber.
>>
>>378625723
Not him but a bad WRPG will waste your time like no other game.

A lot of those bad game genres on Steam can be played for 10-30 minutes and refunded because you know that's all there's gonna be.

You HOPE like a motherfucker a WRPG will improve. Maybe at the 5 hour mark, maybe at the 10 hour mark.

I haven't played Tyranny, but have heard it's disappointing to casual Obsidian fans (which I consider myself because I don't drink their kool-aid)
>>
>>378625856
Then fucking say that it's "disappointing to casual Obsidian fans". Equating mediocre or disappointing games with trash is harmful for the perception of games that genuinely try something interesting but get bashed or overlooked.

I always have this conversation in the hopes that people will be more thoughtful of how they present their opinion to others, because yes, it does fucking matter, even on 4chan. 15 years ago I was arguing that Ruins of Myth Drannor could not be considered trash even if it wiped clean your PC, and fastforward 2017 people are honestly claiming that fucking Tyranny is unadulterated trash. There are dozens of games that have interesting mechanics that are ignored because people adopt this artificial echo chamberish attitude.

And no, I didn't like Tyranny. And I wasn't disappointed since the game was basically a B-tier project from the start, so who cares, their developers acquired some experience with the engine and shit.
>>
Keep this up and you might earn yourself a thread on /vg/
>>
>>378626819
This is /v/. You hardly if at all can get coherrent conversations on video games. The board will cherrypick the shit out of anything, even games that get hundreds of awards.

Tyranny imo was far from stellar, but at least it was a refreshing take on RPG.

So this thread keeps popping up every three days or so, anti-shilling is real.

fuck rpgcodex and fuck hwite people

Is it really the same guy? I come into these threads to call out OP but thank you for saving me the trouble. I don't even understand why he does it because it doesn't even look like he replies to these threads. Is it some elaborate shill or something?
>>
>>378627773
Pirate it, and play through the first act. It's 5-6 hours top. If you like it buy it as >>378627819
says. Othervise skip it.

>lens of 10/10 reviews

I have never read the conclusion or a content of a single review of either Path of Exile or Tyranny I actually PLAYED the games you absolute mongoloid. I'd sooner play vanilla NWN than ever touch tyranny again.
>>
>>378625723

>You know what games are trash? "insert random shovelware nongames here"

Sorry I should've clarified: I was talking about the quality of the game relative to actual videogames that people willingly play, because the "games" you mentioned don't even fit on the scale of 1-10 if you assume a perfect game is a 10 and a terrible game with no redeeming qualities is a 1. On that scale Tyranny sits at 4 if I'm being VERY generous. Not a "7" like your retarded mongo-mind claimed
>>
In the 90's and 80's, tabletop games were very popular, so such games passed and had a big audience.

In the today's, tabletop games are a niche compared to video gaming as a whole, so such games can't pass off well.

It's down to who is better at marketing.
Tyranny failed at marketing.
They could have at least made major marketing points by having ero ero in it, especially since it prides itself on "evil wins",
which would have had butthurt feminists and christian conservatives whining and doing your marketing for you, while your title lives up to its name.
>>
>>378618176
TRANNY
>>
Divinity Original Sin was amazing and 2 is looking to be even better. I really wish people would learn from them and just MAKE THE COMBAT BETTER. These games were limited as hell in that in that departement 17 years ago but excelled in places like ost, art, atmosphere, and story. We should learn from them and just improve what they were incapable of. But we are still stuck in this shitty meme of recreating the games 1:1 without any changes at all and nothing good about them.
>>
>>378627773
It's not. some of the problems people whine about are non-issues, like how there are women in every role, but game has problems with how rushed the final act is and you might find combat not engaging enough. I think it might be the best C&C in a video game yet, though.
>>
>>378630690
>In the today's, tabletop games are a niche compared to video gaming as a whole, so such games can't pass off well.

Actually no, tabletop has never been bigger. Keep in mind that back in the day companies HAD to publish new books on quarterly basis or retailed wouldn't hold their core books on the shelves which tends to inflate the "more books = industry doing better" mindset.
