This is based on small sample size (known men outnumbering known women 50 to 1) but in my experience it's actually women who care about this kind of stuff more. For example, in World of Warcraft (before any transmogs) several girls I played with carried with them RP gear sets (ie. I don't care how skimpy or bare an 'armour' makes a character look so long as it makes some sense or has some justification.

It's what I've discussed with my group for tabletop games. Martial artist who can't wear armour? Fine, wear a fucking bikini or go naked. Rules say it's fine. A spellcaster can wear heels and a cocktail dress as much as they want.

Like wise if a video game says a mage can't wear armour, why not go lightly dressed? So long as you can carry your stuff otherwise, doesn't matter. Shit, I have a pathfinder barbarian with so much damage resistance that against hordes of mooks, I will try and set her up with wearing fuck all but chest bindings and a loincloth for taunting/intimidation purposes. Conversely I have a grappler monk who takes his top off whenever he fights 'cause it makes sense to limit what people can grab on him.

At the end of the day, why not have an ability in a fantasy game to 'glamour' a piece of armour so it looks like the most skimpy of bikinis but if you want some practical wear, it can be?

I always liked how Kirin armor in Monster Hunter is skimpy as hell male or female. Equality at its finest.

If you're talking about early game where you don't have much flexibility, then you definitely aren't forced to wear any specific armor set in any situation, in fact, if you suck at the game and you need help the best armor will be some clunky looking armor to fit its defensive bonuses, so even if you're having a hard time you won't suddenly want to equip something like Narga (Which is also weak to fire, which will make things infinitely harder for beginners in any MH game)
