I think that tanking is generally the easiest job in a group. I think that healing is generally the hardest excluding maybe parsing extremely high as a DPS.

DPS is generally judged subjectively based on not only what the other DPS in the group are doing but also on the perceived expected output from your spec/class based on logs and your gear. As a DPS, your job is to do as much damage as possible without being detrimental to your raid. Assuming mechanics are equal, the DPS that's doing 800k is quantitatively "better" than the DPS that's doing 750k.

Tanking is much more binary. The job of a tank is to properly position the boss and to not die. If a tank does those two things, the tank has successfully fulfilled his job in the raid. On top of that, most of the potential mistakes tanks make (losing aggro/dying) can be attributed to other players besides themselves. Lose Aggro? DPS need to wait to attack. Die? Healers need to focus you more.

Often times, mistakes that tanks make are blamed on other people because tanks are hard to find and also because being able to accurately evaluate tanking effectiveness is not as simple as just telling someone to wait to DPS.

Unless you're playing in the 1-3%, the DPS that the tank does will not influence the outcome of your raid or dungeon. Because of this, unless you're playing on that high level, there is no expectation for a tank to optimize their rotation in the same way there is for a DPS unless the tank is dying regularly.
The reason I think healing is the hardest job in a raid is because the difficulty of a fight for a healer is dependent on not only the base mechanics of a fight but also on how your raid reacts to and avoids (or doesn't avoid) those mechanics.

I also want to make clear that this in no way means that I think tanking at a high level takes no skill. The assertion I made was regarding binary nature of the expectations of tanking as opposed to the more subjective expectations on DPS and healers.

Played healer in an FPS and I did it because I didn't want to piss away the money on buying the best weapons and boosts.

Almost no one else seriously healed or resurrected people. I decided to do that job because it was free points and it was relatively chill.
I decided to play it as a heal ninja and healed resurrected and stayed out of firefights at all costs. Threw the ego I had out.
My new objective was to get to the next downed teamate and heal or resurrect them.
And put down ammo packs.
The only time I kllled was when I saw a clear shot and they were by themselves or they were in the way.

I regular popped into quick pub matches where my side was losing badly and my team would win decisively or at worst tie.

Those fucking idiots wouldn't die until I goddamned well told them they could die and anyone who tried to stop me got a bullet.
