I'm excited for this game but also really don't want to get it. Hyrule Warriors was my first experience with the style of game, and I am not inclined to once again purchase a game only to have a season pass release followed by more DLC that isn't included, then some more, then an alternate version of the game with new stuff, then more DLC, some more DLC, and then some more DLC. That's absolutely despicable, and I want to wait for a complete edition except Hyrule Warriors never got one, so FE Warriors may not.

Good choices? Ephraim, Hector, and Robin. That gives you three characters with a wide range of weapon choices (spear, axe, tome) and some variety to the cast. You can probably throw in Tiki and some of the other girls for variety; we could use a pegasus knight, a staff user, and an archer. Ellie from Fates would be an amusing tank (even if her character is flat). Eirika alongside Ephraim, and (hate to say it) Lucina alongside Chrom would be nice, as well.

Anna as a DLC character would be rather fitting.

Most likely, though, we will just be seeing Awakening/Fates characters with the occasional Ike, Marth, and few other characters recognizable from Smash. That's what most of the current fanbase will recognize, after all.

The game throws unpromoted units at you the whole game. Roy can take at least 1 hit from anything because his speed stat is good enough to not get doubled. The only time I've had trouble with Roy is on that one optional map with the sinking pathways into the water. The boss has Bolting and managed one one-shot him, so I had to make sure I forced the boss to burn through that spell before I moved Roy up.

Otherwise he's not usually weak enough to get one-shotted, and his relatively weak attacks helped in feeding kills to units like Fir and Sophia when they were first starting to try to catch up to the rest of the team. His support bonuses are also wonderful additions to units like Lilina or Sophia, as he helps to increase their otherwise low accuracy.
