Has there been a video game development where a fan has held some of its components (codes, artwork, etc.) hostage?
>>
Starcraft source code - which was returned to Blizzard
>>
>>378596305
>willingly sending disc to authors without being asked
>"held hostage"
????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
>>
>>378596305
wait what
>>
>>378596504
some fag found a disc with starcraft source code on it and sent it back to blizzard.
he got a free ticket to blizzcon.
the internet got a free ticket to mad as fuck town.
>>
>>378596741
Blizz didn't have a backup of their source code?!
>>
>>378595743
Half Life 2, sort of, Valve tricked the guy and got him arrested.
>>
>>378595743
Who the fuck sends copyright notices over twitter?
>>
>>378595743
Klance?
>>
>>378597021
it's not a copyright notice, more like approaching the fan nicely to take them down

of course they do. they just don't want that shit in the hands of the public.
dude could have sold it off to the highest bidder, or released the contents for free, but being a moralfag good goy was apparently more important.
>>
If I found a source code to some old game and the devs really wanted it back, is it illegal to ask for money?

>>

They might sue you.
>>
Wasn't Studio Mir one of the studios that animated Legend of Korra? The episodes that actually weren't animated like shit?
>>
>>378596397
>willingly sending disc to authors without being asked
Are you joking? They threatened him with lawyers.
>>
>>378597346
Depends on if they hold the copyright. Safest bet would be to contact a copyright lawyer and get legal advice.
>>
>>378597516
I doubt they'd seriously do this, it's be much cheaper just to give me the amount I ask for than to sue me, unless I ask for an incredibly unreasonable amount
>>
>>378597585
You can criticize Korra for a lot of shit.
Animation and visuals is not one of them. The show is fucking gorgeous and one of the best looking shows ever made east or west.
>>
>>378597789
he is right though, the Pierrot eps were kinda crappy looking

Blizzcon for free! (Travelling expenses not included)
>>
>>378597789
Yes you can. The episodes animated by Pierrot looked like trash garbage.
>>
>>378595743

The person in the screenshot isn't the leaker and had nothing to do with the leaks.
>>
>>378598147
from what i heard they hooked him up with a lot more than that
>>
>>378598390
Travel expenses, ticket to blizzcon, overmeme merchandise, a copy of diablo 3 lol, some shitty gamer gear with a million blue LEDs, upboats on lebbit and 500 good goy points, they didn't even give him anything starcraft related.

>tfw we were robbed of what could have been the greatest video game of all time
>>
>>378599830
>>378596956
what's the story behind this one
>>
>>378597346

If you legally acquired the physical media that holds it, you have the right to do literally whatever the fuck you want to with it.

Just have a lawyer write up a contract saying that they're actually paying you for the disc and not what's on it and you can dodge every legal ramification there is.
>>
>>378600056
wouldn't they sink you via battle of attrition with legal fees
>>
>>378600004
Fat fuck got pissed and literally cut the game in half.
>>
>>378600753
so it's why we got episode 1 and 2?
>>
>>378600004
Before HL2 was released, there was a ton of pre-release hype built up. Some slav got a copy of the source code for the unfinished game and released it online. Valve was super butthurt about the whole situation, threatened to cancel the project entirely.

Eventually, Valve ended up contacting the guy that leaked the code and offered him a paid gig in the US. When the dude got off the place, FBI agents were waiting to arrest him
>>
>>378595743
Whats the story here?
>>
>>378600056
The problem there is the disc isn't the game. The game is the license it's developed under. If the legal license for the source code states for internal use only (or similar), the owners of that license can go after you legally.

What I truly don't understand is why the guy didn't at least make a rip of the disc image and release it down the line
>>
>>378597197
>Having a moral compass and not being an opportunistic dickhead is a bad thing
>>
>>378597197
>dude could have sold it off to the highest bidder
that's hilarious that you think that, we both know that Blizzard would've stopped him immediately if he had done that.
>>
>>378601286
where do you think are we
>>
>>378598051
Some really shitty blurry images of character designs. Extremely hard to make out anything. Nothing big.
>>
>>378595743
let me get this straight
>some dude takes picture of shitty sketch
>dreamworks is threatening to sue the entire studio because of a picture of a shitty sketch
is this right?
>>
>>378601285

They have the rights to the software, but acquiring it would require them to illegally remove the hardware (which unless you yourself stole it, or bought it knowing it was stolen is 100% legally yours) from your possession.
>>
>>378601523
some dude steals storyboard and images from a studio tour
studio is in hot water because they allowed that to happen

but the one in OP was apparently a troll account that actually managed to stir a lot
>>
>>378601286
>moral compass for Blizzard
>the fuckheads who have based their entire success on the ideas and IPs of others

Heck off, blizzfag.
>>

>>378598836

What would he have gotten for uploading it somewhere ?
>>
>>378601805
Sued
>>
>>378601628
Right. However they have the power to stop you from selling, copying, profiting, distributing, modifying, displaying, or otherwise doing ANYTHING beyond your private and personal use of it. That is also assuming you can prove you legally acquired the copy, which if I remember the guy got it from a garage sale. Without proper proof of purchase, lawyers could seek and compel you to turn over the disc.

>>378601695

modding communities and starcraft fans could have benefit greatly from this.
but someone traded that in for a few brownie points with a company that doesn't give a shit about them.
but that doesn't matter when you can have the moral high-ground, I guess.
>>
Thanks for reminding me some utter cuck actually found the starcraft source code and sent it back to blizzard
>>
>>378602070
they don't care about piracy they care about trade secrets
>>
>>378601101
wasn't he a german kid and was stopped at his countrys airport by the police so the USA wouldn't send him to fuck me in the ass prison for the rest of his life?
>>
>>378602621
>In June 2004, Valve Software announced in a press release that the FBI had arrested several people suspected of involvement in the source code leak.[16] Valve claimed the game had been leaked by a German black-hat hacker named Axel "Ago" Gembe. After the leak, Gembe had contacted Newell through e-mail (also providing an unreleased document planning the E3 events).[17] Newell kept corresponding with Gembe, and Gembe was led into believing that Valve wanted to employ him as an in-house security auditor. He was to be offered a flight to the USA and was to be arrested on arrival by the FBI. When the German government became aware of the plan, Gembe was arrested in Germany instead, and put on trial for the leak as well as other computer crimes in November 2006, such as the creation of Agobot, a highly successful trojan which harvested users' data

Shit you're right. I had it somewhat right though, Gabe was catfishing the fuck out of the poor kid. I thought they actually got him in the States

Pretty much almost nothing that couldn't have been done in the Warcraft 3 editor or in, say, any other RTS like Red Alert 2.
>>
Who the fuck is Klance? Is that some fujoshi garbage? I imagine it is if a fan wants to make the character canon.
>>

People can just make their own fucking RTS game and not mod a 15 year old game dumbass
Only this shithole gives a shit and that's just because being contrarian is the point of this board
