Red Steel 2. The first game was absolute shit, but the second game is amazing. I absolutely love the mix of feudal Japan and Wild West it has going on. It's basically a hack-n-slash with shooting mechanics thrown in. It actually takes advantage of the Wii's wagglin' mechanics incredibly well. I definitely recommend it.

Your toku influence is very clear but it feels lacking in originality. Although nothing about the design itself is offensive the design feels quite shallow overall. The only detail I would say maybe remove is the weird handle bar things on the legs. Your actual art though is incredible, you clearly have great talent. If you have a blog I would be interested in you sharing, this is great stuff. Maybe it sounds weird but I feel like I'm looking through an art book with that sketch, if that makes sense.

Yeah, I'm a regular on /ic/. But I find that for the general appeal of character design, you're always better off asking regular people rather than artists.

Anyway, I guess I should elaborate a bit before moving forward. These characters are for a fighting game, for a manga/comic about eSports. So some of the fighters in the roster are meant to feel a bit derivative/heavily inspired, as they're meant to pay a bit of homage to iconic vidya/pop culture chars. There are other more original ones as well though. Also, I'm fully fleshing out the game as a real game as it's necessary for the story, so every character has a complete moveset, backstory, personality, etc...

As other anons said, it really looks like "generic cyborg ninja'' but in a fighting game there is nothing wrong with going generic if you add some originality, your designs can really work, i really like the jacket and scarf, it makes the character feel very fluid, nice work with the art tough.

Pretty much, yeah. It's easily one of the best Wii games. I'm sure it's been emulated already but I honestly can't see a PC version doing the same justice. It actually does play amazingly with motion controls.

You can buy a compatible bar for the PC nowadays, anon. I don't know if you can do any fancy graphical enhancements, but pretty much every Wii game has equal or superior playability on the PC nowadays with Dolphin. Most of the weird bugs I know about are GC games.

That's good. Honestly, graphics don't mean much for a game like Red Steel 2, which has this blocky cell-shaded art style. As long as the game runs fine and the controls are responsive.

I've always considered this game to be the forgotten third M-rated Wii game alongside No More Heroes and Madworld. It has a similar feel to them.

I appreciate the idea of a fighting game character designed with a toku influence but I agree with that the others in the thread have said that it seems too shallow and derivative.
You managed to design a character that is simultaneously unoriginal and basic, and yet cluttered and overdesigned. Congrats, you made an Overwatch character.

Those Kamina thingies clash too heavily with the colors on the rest of his face and they seem too over-the-top for your design, since the muted colors and armor imply at least some form of practicality. It goes along nicely with the scarf though and that seems to be what you were going for.

It's not a bad design, it's just unfocused. If you trim down the fat and change the colors a little it could go a long way.
You do have a lot of talent as an artist and you can improve greatly.
If you have a blog or anything, I'd follow you.

I can recommend to you some articles on character design if you want to (particularly for fighting games).

Nope, sadly. Going full light or dark side has the Star Forge spit out some end game armor for you, but both look like shit. You never get to play, in any of the games, in an outfit as cool as Revan's original.

In fact, the robes appear to have been so shitty I can't even find images of them, just the better looking mods people made.

Hmm... Crit on this one? It's the first pass on it, so he still looks kinda generic. It's the next I'll be fleshing out though. I'm at a bit of a loss as where to take him to make him more unique. Idea is, inspired by Horseman of the Apocalypse: War, a demon, and meant to fill the big bulky heavy hitter archetype in fighters.

I was looking mostly into Warhammer for influence, as well as Soul Calibur. But he's just missing that "spark" which I feel the some of the others have more strongly.

It's a good watch regardless, I recommend it. But in short, the title says it all. Everything is derivative of other work. Ideas are not property, and we don't live in a vacuum, it's impossible not to be influence by other art.

If you want a Horseman, then look at actual Horsemen for their armor, rather than a viking theme. in Revelations, War (the red horseman) is described as using "a great sword". Maybe a large, two-handed Sabre? The chains make a good allusion to Ares, keep those (they also work of reigns for the horse). The horns on the helmet just make his head look smaller, a plume and more pointed helm might work better instead.
