Thaumcraft and a couple add-ons like Thaumic Horizons and Forbidden Magic will go a long way towards building upon the base game. If you're scared of wizard stuff or don't like magic then find some factory/automation tube simulators like Thermal Expansion and its modules. Those will pair well with Tinker's Construct for handling and utilizing molten metals.

Whatever you do though, just don't jump headfirst into some gigantic retarded modpack and expect to understand a god damn thing.
