This would only work on shit like the Rush games where the levels are boost2win. Classic level design isn't about going mach speed, you often need to platform/explore across both directions.

>/v/ is so young these days they have forgotten Sonic was originally intended as an arcadey, hybrid racer/platformer.
That means you're supposed to replay it. A lot. Like a lot of games back then. If you had the patience of not-children, and bothered to try it sometime (if you ever considered that maybe the adults who say it's good, despite it being 2D, might actually know what they're talking about) you would find that going fast is what makes this mode of game design rewarding and fun and good.

People who complain about 2D Sonic are the same types who complain about turns in racing games.

Who cares if you're not going to react either way?
I actually love these moments in classic Sonic when Sonic manages to outrun the camera
