Gothic is linear as fuck. The overworld is rather expansive, yes, but there's no particular reason to actually explore it since it gated by quests. Just because it has an overworld doesn't mean that it's an open-world RPG, open-world RPG gives player the choice of how he wishes to handle things and at what time as well as featuring an expansive world that is interesting to explore, like every Fallout, TES, Arcanum etc. By that logic almost every RPG is open world, which is not. Gothic hides its linearity like Dark Souls hides its linearity by making areas that you technically can visit from the start incredibly hard for new players.

Gothic series (and Risen to an extent) are about territory control. Each chapter you can explore whatever the fuck you want, but good luck getting through places and exploring without any strength. However, get rid of some nasty fucking ogre and there's no respawning, only added mobs after each chapter. So you can basically mow down paths and then just travel safely knowing that those fuckers are dead.

Also it's a game where even at higher levels multiple enemies can fuck you up bad.

The only argument about gothic being "linear" is in the aspect of story related quests, because it begins with many options, but there's only one baddie. Eventually in these games whichever group you join only matters for weapon and skill choices, because the opposing team will either stop existing or join up forces anyways.
