Never played one before. Where should I start?

I'd say Symphonia since it's most people's first tales. If you don't mind playing a game that didn't age well. Or just go straight with Berseria.

I'm playing through Hearts R right now. It's okay so far, kinda jarring that the dub is still Japanese and the English is all subbed in (and a little out of sync, but not by much.)

Question to long time tales fans:

I beat Symphonia years ago, and currently working on Berseria. I am planning on playing Tales of the Abyss emulated sometime as well as finishing up my run of Tales of Eternia (PSP) and Tales of Vesperia sometime.

What are some other tales games I should play? I was also considering playing Tales of Phantasia as well sometime down the road.

Zestiria if you're morbidly curious since Berseria is a prequel to that. Keyword morbidly.

Vesperia on PS3 with translation patch if you have CFW assuming that's what you're playing so finish it.

After that the only actually good ones are Phantasia and Destiny, the latter of which isn't fantranslated yet. If you go for Phantasia, play the PS1 version.
Team translating Destiny plans on translating the superior PSP version of Phantasia after they're done with Destiny.

I'm actually emulating and playing through Tales of the Abyss currently. The way AD skills worked bothered me though so I grabbed a clear data and started with all capacity cores and max amount of all fon slot chambers. Not sure if I robbed myself of a good experience though. It just seemed shitty that you're stuck chaining attack x3>base>arcane for 2/3 of the game

The port is not the issue here.
The issue is that the localization (both on PS2 and on 3DS) literally took out voices from the skits.
The PS2 undub isn't even an undub, what they basically did was hack all the English text and assets into the JPN version of the game to have voices in skits.
On 3DS nobody has the skills/want to put in the effort to do that.

Pisses me off since 3DS version is basically superior due to improved interface, loading times and widescreen.

Been playing Berseria on hard. Currently trying to get some plant to make medicine. Cast is one of the better ones but the battle system feels lacking and makes me wish it had Xillia 2's system.

I figured they could leave the Japanese dub in the older games to cut costs. It worked well enough for Hearts (aside from the name changes), and I think a lot of Tales fans are weeb enough to play with superior Nippon VAs instead of half-assed cheap English ones. But it's just a small dream of mine.

We know there's a game coming for the Switch, but I hope it's not a mainline game. I don't want to buy a console for one game. It'd also be nice to see a Tales game that didn't look like it was made 5 years before its release date. And they have like three Tales mobage going on right now, I'd be surprised if there were no announcements related to them.

Worst case scenario: Bamco gives up on console/PC Tales and goes all-in on shitty smartphone gacha games. It will happen one day. But I hope the time has not yet come.

I usually play with Japanese voice when possible because it sounds strange to my ears to hear English voicing what is obviously a translated script from Japanese, yeah. But they also get some real bottom of the barrel VAs for Tales too. Fucking Moana was a blight as a recent example.

If I had to say, it's a combination of factors:

- Dressed like a slut but pure of heart (no experience whatsoever)
- Competent onee-chan type
- Was better than Jude
- Bazongas

I personally like her because she got shit done, was never a helpless damsel in distress, and acknowledged Jude's feelings without being a bitch or getting caught up in worrying about "all these new human emotions... doushio?!". You could genderswap her and she'd still be great as a guy- Milla was a strong character.

Velvet is kind of like Milla mk.II. She's dressed like a slut but pure of heart, feminine without being weak because of her vagina, has a goal that drives her forward with no thought to spare for romance, and is a competent onee-chan type. Honestly they could clone Milla forever with different flavours for differentiation and I would be as happy as a clam.

The only thing I liked about Jude was that he wasn't a typical stupid genki protagonist and his dub voice is one of the few that I prefer over the original Japanese. He was still a lost puppy pining after Milla for most of the game- she had all the identity, motivation, and gusto. Only in the latter half of the game did Jude become his own character with his own motivations.
