The presence of all these extra characters added nothing but cringe for the likes of Big, Amy, Rogue, and Tails in the Adventure games, but by Heroes they were being used a little better, except the ensemble cast was going through the same levels over and over, often times just markedly worse version of the Team Sonic ones. Just having them as tagalong buddy characters is fine but Sega read "no more shitty alt gameplay" as "make the shitty alt gameplay also-Sonic." I'd like a game where you can pick between buddies at the start of levels and they give Sonic different abilities.

Nigga, none of them have been playable in a main series game since 2006. Most of them haven't shown up at all since 2008, with Generations being a semi-exception since they existed, but didn't do anything of significance.

There was never anything inherently wrong with the extended cast. The problem was the way they were handled and shoehorned into every game between 1998 and 2006. Everyone was always there as a full party, with none of the characters being given proper breathing room. Rush had the right idea by limiting the cast to focus on the core players (Sonic, Tails, Blaze, Cream/Marine) with cameo appearances by Amy, Knuckles, and Vanilla. If more games did that, then nobody would be complaining and perpetuating this meme. The fact that the franchise has been struggling to find itself even after it purged the extended cast in Unleashed speaks more volumes about SEGA's handling of the franchise than the extended cast existing ever did.

I think people are asking the wrong question here. Cream parallels with Tails better and has a few things she can do compared to Tails similar to how Sonic and Blaze are the same yet different.

To be honest I really don't want to sound like Boco Jr, but Amy really is one of my least favorite characters. In nearly every game she's in, she's the worst character to play as and I just don't find her all that likable. Blaze is a badass, Cream's gameplay made her a badass, but Amy is just such a loser to me.

I think the Sonic franchise has a wealth of underutilized or flanderized characters that get undue hate. To humor you all, here's my most despised Sonic character.

Literally caused Shadow's character arc to become retarded. There was a definite idea behind Shadow the Hedgehog that could have been interesting. It didn't need guns, aliens, or swearing. All it needed to do was show us Shadow's resolution in accepting himself and his past after the events of SA2 and Heroes. The morality system wasn't even that bad an idea; the opportunity to make Shadow the character you though he was, even if it wasn't canon, had the potential to be gratifying in a way. (The endings I felt most closely tied with my interpretation of Shadow were the "slightly hero" ones that came after Cosmic Fall, but I digress.) But instead of something cool, like finding old recordings from Gerald and Maria or something, we got "you're actually a half-alien" instead. Like, what was the point of the backstory and connection with the chaos powers in SA2 then? It just made everything stupid, plus Black Doom himself is just a generic Satan stand-in, with no interesting quirks or interesting philosophies to back him up.

I don't even understand the problem people have with them. They are pretty much the Modern version of powerups from the Classic era games except not as overpowered because they only last a limited amount of time. They aren't power ups at all. Power-ups build on an existing movebase, like the elemental shields giving Sonic a new move but letting him do whatever else until he gets hit and loses it, or Mario's flowers letting him toss around a new projectile but he can still do whatever until he gets hit and he loses it.

Wisps, on the other hand, completely replace Sonic. You have to do one thing with them, and can only do that one thing until its time ends.. After that it's back to Sonic gameplay.

Power-ups are character plus the power-up. Wisps just replace the character.

Because some of them aren't just mario characters but have their own spin offs like wario ware and DK country and most of those characters are just background enemies, reoccuring bosses, or one offs. Most of those are just different kinds of enemies, like at 75% are JUST different enemies that are meant to give the game a variety of obsticales. They BARELY even count as characters. Are you honestly going to argue that a fucking blooper is a character? Also mario has WAY more games than sonic so it makes sense that those games would have characters for specific spinfoffs that aren't important in other games,like how waluigi and daisy are mainly in the sports kart and party games or how baby mario and luigi are just in the yoshi series and games involving time travel. The only problem with Sonic's cast of characters is that they all are developed with quirky and unique personalities, they are all really likeable, but they are severely underutilized.

Sonic Team has some phobia against having them be playable anymore because depending on how the fanbase reacts, it could be detrimental to the entire project. So why not make more spinoffs?

Shadow The Hedgehog was a great game, I don't care what anyone says. It was a game that explored and developed Shadow's character as well as his relationship with the rest of the cast. No matter how fucking bizzare his backstory truly is, everyone went nuts over it and it's one of the reasons why Shadow is the second most popular character in the Sonic series.

Same with Blaze in Sonic Rush, Tail's Sky Patrol and his other games, or Team Chaotix & Knuckles in Knuckles Chaotix, Sonic Riders, etc. Make more fucking spinoffs that have to do with the other characters or have them do more in the new games. Don't just let them rot away. It's amazing group of personalities that need to be touched upon further.

I would fucking jump a bridge to get a Team Chaotix game in the style of Sonic Boom. That was a game that actually could have worked with those characters. They are fucking detectives that like to kick ass and ask questions later! What the fuck SEGA?
