The core combat in Nier is servicable, but nothing impressive. The balance is fucked but he moves around nimbly enough and the spells give a sense of progression so you can play with new stuff, and the game is short enough that it only outstays its welcome if you're going for ending C/D. Persona 3 has shitty turn based combat that doesn't evolve in any significant way, and it's the only thing outside of VN segments to do during the whole 70 hour experience.

Mediocre combat (p3) >>> 'deal with it' combat(Nier) imo. Sure you can beat the game even in damage sponges mode, but it won't be fun nor rewarding.
And the game might be shirt but you have to 'beat it' multiple times and visit the same areas over an over again. Shit is almost as bad as tartarsauce.
Then we have the most boring sidequests ever, they are sometimes grindy and add nothing to the game, and most of them end with the quest giver bring dead or missing.
Nier is a 5/10 game at best.
P3 is a 6-7/10.
