Mario has a ton too, the reason why is they can actually pull relevant characters unlike Metroid and F-Zero since no one gives a shit about characters that aren't Samus or Falcon. Also why do people constantly complain about having MORE characters. Street fighter 5 had a measly 16 characters total at launch and as a fan of both I'd love more fighting styles then less.

I just wouldn't mind seeing Simon Belmont in it.

Yeah, but the thing is Fire Emblem is not as popular, and therefore, not allowed to have more characters, for some reason. As stupid as that sounds, 6 is still a good number and all the characters have fun movesets. Even Lucina has a solid following in the competitive scene.
