Arena is a rather basic fighting game. Is fun as fuck though. Specially the Golden Arena thing with the collecting skills and stat allocation things.

Except it introduced some pretty good ideas. Awakening is still the best comeback mechanic in any fighting game. Shadow/normal mode added certain depth that was worked out when they finally balanced it, which we never got. And each character, just about had a unique mechanic similar to Blazblue's drive.

You're joking right? The Arena games are basic as fuck. True that most characters have different unique mechanics but those are shallow and are only relevant for a couple o combo strings. And I felt that the game is really unbalanced for some characters.
Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed my time with Arena and Arena U and can't wait how they'll improve the formula in the supposed P5A, but they're not very technical.

It's better than rage in Tekken or Xfactor in Marvel. It made it so that the strategy was to try to leapfrog it all together, which did cause balance issues because some characters could do that much easier than others. Going one step further, you could also trigger it yourself to give you the defense boost and 50 meter for a omc
Then we have most characters having unique systems/"meter" management. Junpei's is probably the most creative I've seen in ever, even if he was utter shit at any high level. Labrys' axe meter was incredibly fun as well, Yukiko building up for unblockables or Naoto working on her instant kill.
Add to that air-turn which I wouldn't mind seeing tried out in other games, which made crossups a thing which generally aren't common in anime fighters, and you have some INTERESTING mechanics.
