Well I don't donate to kickstarters so I don't know about that but even if they underdelivered on their promises, Grim Dawn is still a great diablo clone.
A worthy successor to Titan Quest too.

Could you elaborate on what you think is "stripped down" in Grim Dawn compared to D2?

I remember that Titan Quest annoyed me to no end with how slowly your character was developing. Is it faster in GD or there's still like an hour between level ups?

However for a kickstarted game with no budget I'd say that 1mil+ is phenomenal.

Even if literally all those copies were sold for $2 each (and this is obviously not the case) it still made millions of dollars.

Grim Dawn was dev'd on ~500k by literally 10 people over about 5 years for reference.

probably the big take away from this is that a relatively big audience still exists for these kinds of games.
