It's mainly because it's both a PC exclusive and insanely popular, especially when you compare it to something like persona.

Here's the run down, and don't let the shills tell you otherwise

>Specs
Upgrading will do nothing. The game is built in Unreal Engine and you won't be able to reduce lag or stuttering at the top end with better specs. Your only hope is that they improve how they do things.

>Gameplay
The game lasts a long time. You spend anywhere from 5-10 minutes gathering and walking. This is because you need to basically get a set type of guns in order to compete and it's all random, also you're likely to be outside the play area when you start if you don't land generically in the middle. It encourages heavy camping and not being the first to move. Issues with aiming, lag, desync, and so forth make aiming and shooting feel slow. Actions feel like you're in a dream, or in jello.
Overall it's an extremely slow paced shooter that punishes you for trying to play it with any sort of speed.
The 100 players is a meme. You never are in large scale confrontations. At most you'll likely see 8 in a single player game, and that's honestly pushing it to the extreme.
Gunplay requires multiple shots to kill in most cases, expect 3-4 perfect shots. Also players can heal to 75% health pretty easily behind cover.
Most of the fun is around the build up. It's a Twitch game because you spend a lot of time doing nothing which lets Streamers talk and go into 'hype mode' when something finally happens.

>Bugs
The game has plenty of bugs right now. If you try to pick up items too quickly, your character will flail around like a retard doing nothing. Lag is a huge deal, and desync happens often. Actions are slow to react and everything feels like you need to fight to make things happen. Lag and desync will make many of your perfectly placed shots not hit.

>Hacks
Client side hacking is extremely easy. It's built in Unreal Engine which is a well known engine, easy to cheat something that everyone already knows about. Hacks are readily available.

That's just the reality of it. A lot of the issues are due to networking, improper use of Unreal graphics, and the general "scale" they try to achieve. There's nothing you can do about that.
