They did an absolutely shit job because WWI is a unique turning point in human history. Every war post WWI is considered modern warfare, every war before WWI is fought with muskets and swords on horseback.

They missed a huge opportunity to make something new by making trenches, chemical weapons, and a huge waste of human life the main point of gameplay.
