I unironically liked Ulysses. For me, his writing was spot on. He isn't supposed to make sense or be logical, he's lashing out in grief and anger and is desperate for someone he can blame for the loss of his home. If it wasn't the Courier, it would be someone else, and he'd make whatever leaps of logic he had to in order to justify it to himself.

Slogging all the way through the Divide to reach him, talking him down, then shutting off the nukes and fighting off the Marked Men together felt very rewarding for me. I liked going back to see him every so often.

What i don't like about recent bethesda-style RPG games (not sure about new vegas) is that a lot of locations are tied to some quest that you can only get in a quest hub.

It feels like an mmorpg in a sense that there's really nothing to do in the world except for quests. It's meant (it's designed that way) that player bounces from one quest hub to another until he completes every single quest in the game. The game is linear at it's core, the open world is just a gimmick.
Exploration exists but it's very shallow and you don't get the full experience. What you get is half empty locations with enemies without any story behind those locations because characters don't talk to you or just don't exist until you start a certain quest tied to that location.

Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout3/NV and Fallout 4 all suffer from this.

About a year ago mods actually did move these to /vg/, but while they can consistently reach bump limit here they die a slow death of page 10 bumping there, and a lot the the activity just came from bickering with /fog/. NV is a game that enough people on /v/ like to the extent that they'll pop in and chat if they see a thread while browsing the catalog but not enough that they'll seek out a general with intent. It's not even that I don't like the game. It's fairly fun just wandering around. But eventually I have a To-Do list a mile long and none of them sounds more compelling than each other so I don't do any missions. After a while just wandering the wastelands gets repetitive. See ghoul, shoot ghoul, loot ghoul eyeball for 7 caps.

That and the fact that as soon as I create a character I have second thoughts. Guns characters are too vanilla, energy weapons characters have lame sounding and looking guns, explosives characters are garbage in the beginning and explosives toss loot everywhere, sneaky characters are boring after several hours, melee characters have to be bullet sponges more than anything else and melee combat is bad.

I'd say power through the beginning of the game, the game is worth the effort. I know this is a meme and all but NV starts opening at Novac or so. Most of the quests in NV are fairly compelling if you're willing to sit down and listen, so to speak.

I wouldn't worry too much about looting too much, you'll be swimming in caps by the time you get to the strip anyway so I'd say just pick up what you NEED. Oh and if you're finding the movement speed to be a bit too slow, look up a sprint mod from Nexus.

I just took a trip through the Mojave, through the dam, to Vegas and damn I never realized how well researched New Vegas was until I actually came here for myself.

The billboards on the side of the road out in the middle of the desert is too accurate. You know you're getting close to Vegas when billboards for strip clubs and shit start appearing from nowhere.
Having a slum around Vegas is absolutely fitting since that's how it is in real life.
I always though it was weird that a desert had so much plant life and shit but now that I'm here I see the desert is green as fuck.
And of course the railroad, the highway, etc. are all real and you can visit them in real life. There's even a few gigantic solar farms around.
And the other thing that surprised me was that the cliffs surrounding the desert in NV weren't just there to box the player in. If you look over the horizon IRL you can see cliffs rising in most every direction.
Oh, and I tried rattlesnake, bison, and different kinds of cactus fruits and they were all delicious in their own way.

Only disappointing thing is that the strip in the game just can't compare to the real life strip. Not enough crazy people, not enough nearly naked women, and the strip itself is too small, and there aren't enough ruins of cool "theme" casinos like the Paris or the Luxor. Imagine exploring the depths of a mummy's tomb inside the pyramid or something? Or finding a place like the Excalibur and it's all medieval larpers and no guns are allowed. But anyway the small strip was an engine/time limitation I think.

I'm definitely gonna have to replay NV when I get home.

Its a stand alone mod if anything. Best to play without other quest mods or mods that add things to the map.
