Any heat seeking grappling enemy. Was pretty jarring going from RE4 to RE5 when if you timed and baited an enemy correctly in RE4 you could avoid damage. Yet in RE5 they just 360 noscope grab you for damage.
Same thing with Dying Light, if you come within a certain distance of a zombie you get locked into a damaging animation. Doesn't even let you dodge. Yes of course I'm aware of the skills that let you escape quickly, don't be a fuck.

Inventory limits in games not about survival/resource management, overburden, fall damage, level scaling enemies while it's possible to level up from raising non-combat applicable stats.
>>
Any poorly done mini game that's mandatory. If it's a well done mandatory mini game, sure it breaks off from the game's main gameplay, but at least it'd still be fun. But if it's badly done you're breaking off from the main gameplay in exchange for unfun shit.
>>
Any game that has a variation of the confusion status. You know what I'm talking about. Any status that makes your allies attack you, or themselves, or help the enemy, or throw away rare items you can't get back. Because I LOVE the feeling of "Oh wow, I'm getting completely screwed for no reason, just because the game said so! That's fine!"
>>
Level scaling, be it loot or enemies. I like to stumble on rare artifacts by accident or by following that trail of breadcrumbs to it, not just have it generated for me. Same with enemies, I like to stumble into the wrong neighborhood and have my shit fucked if I don't turn back.

In the case of Oblivion leveling everything to 100 has the effect of making every enemy into a ridiculous damage sponge.

That's not challenge though. All it does is take control away from you, with the flip of a switch. The computer didn't have to earn that confusion. I get just about every rpg under the sun does it this way and it's a standard, but I really never cared for it. it's just so passive and thoughtless. it's also a bitch to balance and games usually do a poor job conveying what a good level to be is. you're either too powerful or not powerful enough. chrono cross did it reasonably well, where you'd only get stat increases from boss fights, and it felt like you earned it, instead of being able to grind on weak enemies and essentially break the game.

It doesn't work like that dummy, the worst offenders of grinding is PRG's. If I can't 1. Chose my own dialogue choices and 2. Experience content in a non-linear fashion then I'll lose my fucking mind

I have over 1000 hours on Warframe and I enjoy it because that's where the substance of the game is, in it's minute to minute gameplay.

I can only watch the exact same animations, and here the EXACT SAME BATTLE MUSIC so many times before before I want to bash my skull in. Especially when theres the little to no gameplay verity in Persona and other turn based style RPGs after you've figured out the optimal battle strategy.

Enemy attack tracking, this is the biggest reason Dark Souls enemies even pose a challenge honestly, the AI is pretty mediocre. Comparing the enemy attacks in Phantasy Star Online 1 to 2, the enemies in PSO1 are stuck attacking in the direction they started from just like the player but it was also a slower game.

Well designed escort missions have the target moving slightly slower than the player everytime.

Not so much a mechanic, but falling-off difficulty.

I have the worst habit of quitting games right around the 80-85% mark because of this. Early game is a struggle, middle game is easier, and when you finally hit the last 15-20% of the game you are usually so hilariously overpowered or competent that you know for a fact nothing they can throw at you will be a challenge. At that point, I simply put down so many games because I lose all motivation to play. I can't even remember how many final bosses I have just flat-out ignored or missed because the end of the game is so piss-easy that I can't even bring myself to complete it.

You really can

I don't get the fusing meme, sure I used it, but you can just level a persona by GRINDING until its stuff is relevant to the level your on.

+picking and choosing the right personas to fuse to get want you want is easy with catalogues. And then you can farm personas to fuse, and you know exactly which you need to fuse to get specific abilities and elements etc etc.

You eventually just build the perfect collection of Personas, thats what happened to me. The game divulged to just leveling them to keep on par with enemies stats.

But I don't need to even explain that to make my point, think about it this way dude:
>Enemies will always have a weakness
>Once you find out the weakness it becomes easily exploitable
>Exploit
>Rinse and repeat
That's persona in a nutshell.

Maybe 5 isn't like that, when I can emulate it I guess I'll find out.

Perhaps if I didn't google it and found personas naturally it's make your point more relevant but I don't have the time to farm and fuse and level all those personas to play organically like that.

>I love persona but I've never finished a game because of this.

You are such a fucking retard, I have to call you out. First of all, "Persona" is a series of fucking games. Do you mean Persona 1 and 2, or Persona 3 and 4? ALSO, you fucking retard, they don't REQUIRE you to grind and are definitely NOT designed around you "grinding", you fucking retard. The dungeon crawling gameplay is meant to be fun, you idiot.

I will never understand you fucking faggots and your absolutely irrational seething autistic hate of turn based RPGs. How is a turn based RPG where you have to think and use strategy a "grind", but mashing the same combo over and over again in Bayonetta to get through common enemies to see a cutscene NOT a grind?

You don't have to "grind" in any of the Persona games, and if you don't want to, you can easily turn the difficulty to "Beginner" or "Easy" which awards you more EXP and money than you'll ever need.

Also:

>If I can't 1. Chose my own dialogue choices and 2. Experience content in a non-linear fashion then I'll lose my fucking mind

Then you CLEARLY don't "love" Persona, because Persona has BOTH OF THOSE FUCKING THINGS. YOU RETARD.

DON'T CLAIM THAT YOU LOVE A GAME IF YOU CLEARLY DON'T. HOLY SHIT.

If you come back at me by responding, "Oh, I like the dating sim parts but not THE GRIND" then GO PLAY A FUCKING VISUAL NOVEL. Without Persona's gameplay (the dungeon crawling), you literally have a subpar visual novel about a bunch of high school students. If you want to go read a story about a bunch of Japanese high school students, there are a ton of visual novels I can recommend to you.

Yes, and, funny enough, thats an exploitable strategy isn't it? Once you know that, it makes the encounter the exact same thing everytime does it not?

QTEs aren't that bad. When they were first introduced in RE4, everyone thought they were cool, because they were being used correctly - to allow the player to control actions that they could never do in the regular gameplay engine.

QTEs are only really bad when developers use them as a lazy shortcut for something they easily could have done through the normal gameplay. Like the final boss in Shadow of Mordor

Well, in that case, you can actually tell. Increasing by 50% means +50% of the base rate. Increasing by 50 percentage points means +50. It is easy to get confused, though, and the game might not always make it as clear.

Big dev reason, and a sensible one at that.

If the escort moves slower than your slowest speed, you'll always need to stop.
If the escort moves as fast or faster than your fastest speed, you'll always fall behind.

By making the escort move at that speed, you'll be comfortable with them being ahead (since you can run to catch up) and comfortable with them being behind (since you can walk and fall in line). Plus, you'll feel superior to the NPC since you can outrun them whenever you choose.
>>
>>378490519
Not really.
Let's say you have 0% critical chance, then you get a 20% critical chance item, so your critical chance is now 20%, then you have another item increasing your critical chance by 30%, some items just sum chances and another one increase your actual %, but in most game they don't explain that

Encumbrance is so fucking stupid especially when its combined with fast travel. Like >>378485569 said, it doesn't actually add any challenge, it just slows the game down since you end up having to make trips. There is nothing fun about managing arbitrary numbers assigned to items in a list especially in a game with hundreds of items. Managing inventory SPACE like RE4's briefcase tetris however is fun, probably because its more of a puzzle/OCD thing, the game is linear (no real going back for old items) and also there are relatively few items in that game, so a single item has more value making the choice of whether its worth the space taken up.

I used to feel guilty for having no weight mods for games, but I played Witcher 2 last year and modded out the insane weight limit after about 20 hours of constantly picking up everything you see then entering the shitty menu to decide which completely unimportant items are the least important to drop them and pick up yet more loot. Instantly the game's pace picked up and it was a hundred times more enjoyable.

I don't mind it if said unique equipment outclasses the fuck out of normal gear, what does piss me off is that instead of it not being able to be repaired at all (so you use it sparingly) they make it so it can be repaired, but only with items that drop from the hardest enemy 0.0000001% of the time or with ludicrous amounts of money.

Other people, usually. I was playing an autism simulator and some guy told me to do something I already had in the OOC, and when I said I had I got banned for "IC in OOC." Everyone spammed the chat with "LLOOOOOOLLLLLL" and "ick ock ick ock!" I'm not kidding, they were actually typing that shit in.

Guess I shouldn't be surprised, the server was a 4chan server. But goddamn, it's like people don't want anyone to play the game. They won't be satisfied until it's just 5 of them complimenting each other in an empty lobby. At least my role was empty for the rest of the round. They probably got by without me but I'm glad their need for control inconvenienced them.

The most Rage-inducing thing for me is any enemy that has a Whack-A-Mole mechanic.

Basically where you have to wait for a random chance to strike, and that moment might take agonizingly long, or it might not last long enough for you to get a hit off.

The most rage-inducing enemy with this mechanic for me is the Mask of Infamy (pic related) from the Binding of Isaac.

Basically you need to kill that heart-thing behind it first (Not very difficult) while dodging the big mask that is Invunlerable.

After this, though is where things hit the shitter.

You need to wait for the Mask of Infamy to charge towards you in a direction so you can hit it from behind and damage it.

The only problem is this motherfucker takes at LEAST 20-30 hits to kill, and it can change ANY direction in an instant. Not to mention it's almost ALWAYS faster than you and your bullets, so what SHOULD be a 2-3 minute fight can take as long as 10 fucking minutes to murder this damn thing.

Melee attacks that bypass any defense (block, parry, evade, etc) except a single specific one, and which have vague windup animations making it often difficult to tell which way to defend. Also enemies that have absurdly long windup animations obviously designed to fake out the player despite the animation showing no feint or strategy of any kind.

All of this can be overcome by studying the enemies, but I dont think it can be argued that it isnt a fucking stupid wall to get past.

That's the whole fucking point you dumbfucks, don't carry 15 guns if you want to carry food or be able to loot an area. Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 were great because ammo had weight too, you have to drop the shit you don't need as much or sell it. Plan out your attacks on certain areas with what weaponry you think you will need. But instead you buttchugging faggots would rather carry four assault rifles, three shotguns, and two rocket launchers everywhere you go for an easy gameplay. Also weight limits aren't "arbitrary numbers" and you would know this if you fat fucks went to a gym and worked out at different weights.

Ashley works because she tries her best to not get in your way. Like when you aim a gun at an enemy she ducks to make sure she isn't hit. You can tell her to stay out of the fighting, or tell her to go hit a switch in those cases. Enemies aren't trying to kill her, they're trying to capture her.

Think about what makes other Escort missions awful. They get in the way, they're too weak and die. They're plagued with bad AI and get stuck often. RE4 manages to avoid most or all of these problems by design or by how well they implement it.

platinum really loves this shit for some reason
I think it's just dumb
QTEs in general are dumb but those ones piss me off the most because they show up in the middle of combat

Why does everyone bitch about escort missions, but nobody ever talks about tailing missions. You can at least have some fun while escorting because you have to fight. While tailing you just move forward and wait sometimes doing nothing unless you want to start it all over again.

x-factor.

Bosses that are cunts unless you use the one element the are weak to which turn them into pushovers. ( see the armadillo guy in Megaman X.)

Bullet sponge enemies that dont do anything interesting. ( See Destiny and Borderlands 1)

it's incredibly high and probably not worth grinding for because dark souls has a bunch of soft caps and hard caps

But only one of them is.

Useless items and skills. What is the point of having tons of stuff in a game when only a handful of the things are useful?

holy fuck how retarded can you be, encumbrance is not about immersion, it's about limiting the player so they can't pick up literally everything they find and have to make choices about what to take and what to leave.

It limits the player so they're not carrying around a gorillion potions and ammo and 15 swords, whilst still having space to loot every piece of garbage from a dungeon. Instead they're forced to bring what they need so they have room for loot. Granted games like Skyrim implement it poorly where your encumbrance is really high so it's just an arbitrary number that you occasionally go over, but inventory limits exist for a reason.

I swear to god /v/ is filled with casuals who just want to play games on easy mode.

that's a shitty mechanic right there; soft and hard skill/stat caps with 0 indication in-game of where they are

I guess you hate Video Games then. They aren't very realistic.

Platforming

ESPECIALLY 3D platforming.

God, it can fuck off so much!

The only things you need to beat the game are your stat minimums to equip gear/spells and the stats for health/endurance. All of this is shown to you if you examine the items or the consequence of your stats when you are leveling up.

Beyond that it's word of mouth or trial and error, like every other aspect of the game and every other dark medieval game from the company since the late 90s.

I used to edit my max carry weight in fallout 3 and stalker because I was a hoarder but in the last year or so I stopped doing in

it's not so bad most of the time, I think games that let you use companions as mules helps a bit but even if that isn't an option as long as you can store stuff somewhere then weight limits aren't so bad.

Fuck FFXIV, takes hours just to grind a handful of levels unless you spam dungeons and play with fucking leafs that don't understand how aggro works.

Not unlocking skills, but upgrading that same skill you unlocked

I hate this because you can never tell when you should stop.

Is it a skill that only 1 point works? Or do I have to dump 20 points into it to make it usable?
>>

Isn't it past your bedtime?
>>
>>378513168
I hate when games say what it does next to the level of the skill like
>increases damage by 20%
Because you can't tell if that's what it's currently doing or if that's what the next level of it will do.
