I believe some anons mentioned something about the Ao version only have a Chinese port for PC but no Japanese one. Zero's has one, and apparently doesn't really have DRM, while the Chinese one has, and Ao's did have some, but it's not in place anymore, and there's even a download for it available.

Finally finished the third Trails game. Really liked the ending. Makes me want to see more of these characters. Estelle and Joshua's development throughout the three games in particular was great. I don't know why Kondo regrets it and thinks it's embarrassing.

Depends on whether you mean Trails in the Sky, Trails of Cold Steel, or Trails in general.

The main appeal of Trails in general is the fact that it's a huge series of 7 (going on 8 soon) games split up between three different story arcs that are both self-contained stories and part of a larger Trails storyline. Trails has a heavy emphasis on little details and foreshadowing, which makes them fun to play for the mystery you encounter along the journey

Trails in the Sky are the oldest games. Their main draw is the world building. Dialogue is written very well and effectively establishes the specific nature of individual characters in ways other games do not. Each character, including countless NPCs, have their own lives and you can often follow their individual storylines by regularly interacting with them again after every story event. Aside from that, they have a great soundtrack, story, and one of the best vidya romances.

Trails of Cold Steel is a bit different. It's newer and tends to have more modern anime tropes in it. The dialogue isn't as wordy or impressive, but you can still do the same thing with NPCs like in the Sky series. It's great if you like school settings, pick your own waifu, or stories about an empire's internal political conflicts.

The other story arc, the crossbell games, aren't localised yet so i can't say much about them.

I don't know what to tell you to make you play the games. I played Sky first, because i wanted a traditional JRPG and that's what i got, and i loved it. Maybe you hate turn-based combat or 90s anime tropes, but if you do play it, you'll get charming characters, an immersive world, and kickass music. If you play the whole series, you'll be treated to endless references and call-backs. It's quite a delight, if i do say so.

Evo is only in japanese so that's an option IF you speak the language. The main advantage evo has is the full voice acting for the main story, which the steam version lacks. The steam version itself is a significant upgrade over any other english version though since it's in HD.

As for whether or not you should play it, that's up to you, but I always recommend it. You will get to see a whole lot more of Prince Olivert since he is one of the first new playable characters you encounter and he is playable in all three games. In 3rd you ca learn about his rivalry with osborne and the basis for Class VII. The sky games tell the story of the "liberl incident" that is referenced throughout cold steel

Compared to Cold Steel, Sky combat is similar but slower. Also you will find arts are used way more in the Sky games so there's a lot of defensive action rather than just straight up annihilating things with crafts. Healing every turn, using earth wall to reduce the damage you're taking, character positioning is more important etc

I think in the case of Crow, it's more of a matter of just him being lost. He never had some great or grand ideal, he just wanted to get revenge. After he did that, he pretty much didn't actually want anything else. If he had lived, more than likely he'd have just joined Ouroboros because of Vita and have become her personal knight.

I liked Jusis. He was in my active party in most of Cold Steel because of his Noble Command, his latent ATS buff. He's a good mage. As for his character, he's pretty interesting. The aloof way of acting is typical for a noble, but he warms up to you once you take a liking to his hobbies, like Horses. Plus he's a good rival for Rean.

It's like they decide these things as a group, and cribbing tropes from other developers (as fits their market) is nothing new for them. But it clearly hasn't helped their reception, so we're already seeing some changes with Sen III (like the Juna/Kurt implied pair, Olivier acknowledging his limitations and Plan B, etc). Best case, XSEED's relayed some complaints about writing in Cold Steel (II) overseas and they're listening a bit more, or there's been mixed reactions to certain writing from Korean/Taiwanese players.

Kondo's just an aggressive Gagharv fanboy who shouldn't be let near the script if and when they remake those favorites. I haven't seen sourced, non-construed evidence that he, explicitly, is the root of harem/chuuni/insert-modern-LN-trope-here shenanigans. Most of the worst of this in Kiseki games he's directed (mainly Zero and Ao) seems tame compared to what Sen I & II introduced and played straight.

Finding an example of just one Falcom writer's work, aside from Gurumin and Xanadu Next (both solely by Kondo...the latter really avoids everything he gets blamed for), is difficult. I think Ys Origin has the most Takeiri writing in that series (definitely more focus on romance/tough relationships, more subtle implication and conversations in circles), but I don't think he ever works alone.
