while ds2 wasnt what they were advertising, they did take a few steps in the right direction with movement while locked on, power stancing builds, dark magic
sotfs reworked quite a few of the enemy placements that just grinded your progress to a halt like shrine of amana, and dragon shrine
finally, the dlc areas are put together quite well and bring back some of the old philosophies they had in ds1, like environments that 'come to life' as you progress through them, shortcuts that allow ease of access and less backtracking, and bosses that are actually of emotional significance rather than just some dude that you gotta kill

the game is still deeply flawed, but i would argue that every game in the series is like that
