In a perfect world games would just have demos to show you how the game played and give you an approximate amount of hours you'll sink into the game on average instead of this God awful refund system.

Only in proper context, most shmups are relatively short so it's possible to beat in less than 2 hours. If it is only a passable game however you have the right to refund it if you don't think it is good enough to be replayed, unlike good shmups are made to be replayed and have various modes to give more content to the player.
